NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma’s five days of summer camp started in earnest this week and of course SoonerScoop.com was there to see all of it. From a pair of quarterback commitments to multiple wide receiver offers it was a full event for the Sooners staff. With our staff on hand it’s time to take a look at who shined.
Sooners Quarterback Commits Shine
Over the last few months there has, understandably, been a lot of intrigue around Oklahoma quarterback recruiting. The Sooners are one of only four schools in the country, along with Florida State, Florida, and Arkansas, to have quarterback commitments in the 2024 and 2025 classes. So the chance to see both 2024 pledge Michael Hawkins and his 2025 counterpart Kevin Sperry on the same day in Norman was a unique opportunity.
Hawkins threw it about as well as we’ve seen him, connecting on several deep balls and seems to be getting more and more consistent with his delivery. In a setting that doesn’t let him show off his high-end athleticism, it’s a chance to see him further grow his vertical passing game.
Fellow Sooners commitment Sperry continues to climb in national esteem and did nothing to hurt his reputation on Thursday. He did an outstanding job with his downfield delivery and in spite of being in a camp setting with unfamiliar receivers he did a great job on several downfield throws. One pass in particular, a sideline throw to a receiver was dropped on the outside shoulder as the receiver was going out of bounds. It’s hard to imagine a more ideal delivery. And in the end, he simply throws one of the more catchable balls we’ve seen this spring.
Sooners Commit Leads Receiver Group
No group had more talent on hand on Thursday than the wide receivers who were led by Oklahoma commitment Zion Kearney. It was the Scoop’s staff third chance to watch Kearney this spring and every time he has continued to impress.
The nation’s No. 10 receiver according to On3 has elite burst and the kind of frame to make tough catches seem simple. He’s got strong hands and is a natural receiver with the ball in the air. Kearney’s frame is going to make for a unique option in Oklahoma’s receiver room thanks to his ability to fight off defenders.

And though Kearney shined he was far from the only standout pass-catcher as he was joined by in-state 2025 offers Jaden Nickens in the morning session and Elijah Thomas in the afternoon.
Nickens has continued to fill out his frame and has high-end body control. As he gets bigger and stronger his smooth route-running and big frame are going to make for a dangerous outside receiver.
Thomas is a smaller option than Kearney and Nickens but with his long arms and easy explosion it’s not hard to imagine him being one of the nation’s elite receivers in his class.
One receiver that we didn’t get to see as much of as we wanted was Southlake (Texas) Carroll 2026 receiver Brock Boyd. He impressed the Sooners enough to pick up an offer and Oklahoma will be a very real contender in his recruitment.
NOTES:
*The two defensive backs who had any luck with the elite receivers on hand were the 2025 duo of Trystan Haynes and Maliek Hawkins. Hawkins shows a great feel for mirroring receivers and does a great job getting physical when need be. Meanwhile Haynes is a corner with high-end traits that is still figuring it all out, once he does, he can be elite.
*2025 offensive tackle Ryker Haff is a promising young offensive tackle that has leaned out since the end of the 2022 season. He looks natural moving and could feature as a right tackle going forward.
*Owen Hollenbeck may have had as strong a day as any lineman on hand. He looked great using his strong base in pass protection. And though he’s a bit of a mauler, he’s a better athlete than he often gets credit for.
*A name that wasn’t well known coming in was 2025 Tulsa Will Rogers pass rusher Josiah Hammond. Watching him up close you can see the appeal, he’s got a nice frame and good length but he’s still quite raw. As time goes on it will be interesting to see where his potential takes him.
*Two-way lineman Ace Hodges will work next week along the defensive line but was at offensive line on June 1. He’s a guy with a strong base and good athleticism. His height will give some pause but if he hits the camp circuit this summer offers could follow.
