CaneSport is breaking down the top 50 post-spring players on the roster, a list that doesn’t include any post-spring roster additions. Today we break down No. 20, Andy Borregales.
NO. 20 MIAMI PK ANDY BORREGALES
Why he’s No. 20
With a couple of years experience under his belt, Borregales has to be considered one of the ACC’s better kickers. The younger brother of Jose Borregales (who won the 2020 Lou Groza Award in his one year at Miami), Andy hit 17 of 21 field goals as a true freshman in 2021 (long of 55) and this past season made 17 of 20 with a long of 49. He’s made all 77 of his extra points. Also of note: One area Borregales worked on this past season was improving his kickoffs. In 2021 he had 45.1 percent go for touchbacks; last year that number increased to 64.9 percent. So his leg strength and placement on kicks improved. Borregales also told us in the spring that he’s put on 10-15 pounds of muscle which should also help the power on his kicks. Borregales is a very solid kicker.
What he needs to do to move up this list
His 81 percent makes rate last year isn’t too shabby, but there were also times that Mario Cristobal opted to go for it on fourth down instead of try long field goals. There’s no reason this year that Borregales shouldn’t be considered an automatic three points for the team anytime Miami approaches the 30-yard line. Borregales also has to get over the hump in terms of consistently hitting pressure kicks, considering he missed two during a close game at Texas A&M last season.
Realistic season objective
We think Borregales will have more opportunities for field goals this season given an offense that should be a lot more proficient. And Borregales should shine and could emerge as one of the nation’s better kickers if he really can put it all together. He has the leg strength, and the Borregales name is already pretty well known nationally thanks to his brother. So we are looking for Borregales to consistently have touchbacks on kickoffs while converting 85 percent or better of his field goal tries.
