Spring is over, the transfer portal is closed, and we now know a whole lot more about what the Georgia roster will look like in 2023. The Bulldogs wrapped up a successful spring camp nearly a month ago and it’s time to really dig in on what Kirby Smart‘s eighth UGA team will look like.
So we’re ready to take a good, long — like very long, look at the Georgia depth chart. We’re rolling out a series that takes an in-depth look at each position. Next we break down the cornerbacks
Spring synopsis…
Kamari Lassiter is back as the starter at one cornerback position. The junior defender was arguably the Bulldogs’ most improved player from start to finish last season. Georgia worked with him through his early struggles and he made some serious strides. We’re told that he was fantastic this spring.
The other spot is wide open and a few guys got long looks. Daylen Everette was our projected starter going into the spring and he got a lot of work with the ones. But so did his projected competition, Nyland Green. Green actually started with the ones in the G-Day game.
Julian Humphrey came out of nowhere to become a factor as well. Some inside the program will tell you that his high points were easily the best of the bunch. Consistency, however, is lacking at times. A.J. Harris really impressed at times and Smoke Bouie, who transferred to Georgia from Texas A&M in January, had a good string of practices through the middle of spring drills.
Projected starter…
Lassiter has one spot locked down and it’s going to be a knock-down, drag-out fight for the other spot. In fact, don’t be surprised to see Georgia change it from week to week early in the year based on who has the best week of practice. We might even see a three or four-man rotation.
Georgia’s best cover guy at that other cornerback spot is probably Humphrey. He is the most natural in that area. Everette is really strong in coverage but he’s also the most physical out on the edge when it comes to tackling and beating blocks.
Green can struggle some times in coverage but when he’s focused and engaged, we’re told that he has lockdown potential. Harris and Bouie have some serious ground to make up at this point.
Other than injury, what can change?
Any of those three contenders for that starting job opposite of Lassiter are capable of winning it. Right now I would bet on all three getting in-game looks with meaningful minutes. The Bulldogs are going to want to see what they are all about.
We expect a rotation or full-time starter to be in place by the time South Carolina comes to town. If somebody is going to challenge that trio of contenders, we think Harris has the best chance. Bouie seems like a better bet for STAR/nickel or the sub package in the long term.
