4-star Miami DB commit Amari Wallace talks injury diagnosis, pledge to Hurricanes

Miami four-star defensive back commit Amari Wallace may miss extended time with a leg injury, but doctors have offered the No. 262 overall prospect encouraging news.

Wallace, who fractured his shin bone in late July, was told by his doctors he’s capable of making a full recovery from his injury and expects to eventually make a full recovery, although his injury will sideline him for much if not all of his senior season. Wallace committed to Miami shortly after his official visit in late June and is one of 15 four-star Miami pledges in the 2025 cycle.

He is currently listed as the No. 262 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking and No. 22 safety. Miami recruited Wallace as a nickel back.

“The diagnosis was that I have a broken fibula or tibia, one of the two,” Wallace said. “I forget what it’s called. (The doctor) told me it was broken. My mindset has just been to work hard, go through rehab and never miss a day of rehab.”

Wallace said he’s not totally certain what his recovery timeline will look like and is focused on progressing through rehab. Wallace has focused on what he can control regarding how he attacks his rehab and has been less concerned about what good news or bad news he might receive when he meets with doctors.

“(Doctors) were telling me that this injury happens in football,” Wallace said. “It happens in football. Freak accidents happen in football. But yes, it will (return to normal), and yes, it is 100% fixable.”

Miami’s staff immediately offered encouragement after hearing about his injury and has helped Wallace stay positive over the last several weeks. He said several staff members told him to have faith and God has his back as he recovers.

“I love the Canes,” Wallace said. “The Canes, I can’t want anything more from the Canes. What I can say is that I want to thank them. I want to thank the whole coaching staff, the recruiters, everybody. I want to tell them I appreciate them for everything they’re doing. Me committing there, it’s like, why not staying home? Why not have my family see me play at Hard Rock Stadium when they can just drive there instead of having to fly somewhere?”

Wallace said he’s big on loyalty and wanted to make sure he showed the same loyalty to Miami in his commitment the Hurricanes have shown him. He hasn’t formally shut down his recruitment, but no other schools are in his recruiting picture.

Wallace is expected to early enroll.

CaneSport’s Take

We expect Miami to honor its commitment to Wallace regardless of his injury status, and we think Canes fans have little to worry about in his recruitment. Expect to see him at plenty of Miami home games this fall.
