Newsstand: Penn State kicks off busy recruiting weekend

Happy Friday, Penn State fans. This weekend is all about recruiting, as the Nittany Lion coaching staff will welcome more than a dozen players to campus for official visits this upcoming weekend.

Tweets of the Day

As BWI broke on Thursday, Penn State added a 13th visitor to its official visit list in North Carolina defensive lineman Amaris Williams. The Nittany Lions are set to host seven prospects who hold a four-star rating in the On3 Industry Rankings. The list is heavy with linemen, as Penn State has scheduled five defensive linemen and two offensive linemen to be on campus. That includes Top 100 OL/DL prospect Liam Andrews, who ranks among the staff’s most important players at any position.

Fans can check out the complete list of expected high school prospects here. The list will also include junior college cornerback Sione Laulea.

Penn State has locked in ANOTHER official visitor for this upcoming weekend.

Finally, the SEC has decided not to add a ninth conference game to its schedule in 2024 when Texas and Oklahoma join the league. As former Penn State tight end Adam Breneman pointed out, there’s a big discrepancy in the amount of Power Five games that SEC schools will play compared to the Big Ten this upcoming season.

In a one-on-one interview with BWI’s Nate Bauer recently, head coach James Franklin spoke out about this topic.

“If you look at it, the SEC took a very different approach with it being eight games and things like that,” Franklin told Bauer. “Probably the most detrimental decision the Big Ten’s ever made was going to nine games. And the SEC took a different approach and wins national championships. And more importantly, the SEC has multiple teams in the playoffs, more than anybody else.”

Penn State fans can read Bauer’s complete story with Franklin here.

The SEC’s scheduling dilemma is over: The league will play 8 conference games in 2024 when Texas & OU join in what is likely to be a short-term format with a play to eventually get to 9.

Before officials arrived here in Destin – as we reported Monday – this was the trajectory.

Quote of the Day

“Penn State just checks all the boxes for me, as both an athlete and an individual. They have great academics. They have incredible academics. You can’t go wrong going there. Also, everybody pushes each other, from what I heard, to be great not just on the field, but academically. But as far as football goes, they’re great at developing.”
