Grant Williams shines proud as mentee David Sanders pick Vols
Charlotte — VFL and current Charlotte Bobcat Grant Williams was more than a casual spectator Saturday afternoon at his alma mater Providence Day High School as 5-star standout David Sanders made his college choice picking Tennessee.
Williams and Sanders have a history dating back to Sanders’ 8th grade year.
“Coach Brian Field was the first person to tell me, that he was going to be special and not just from an athletic perspective. I said I wanted to met him and that’s how the endowment started. He was the first ever torchbearer is the term to use with the endowment here at Providence Day. There’s not a better person to leave a legacy here,” Williams said of Sanders.
The five-star Sanders chose the Vols Saturday over Nebraska, Ohio State and Georgia. For Williams it as an exciting moment to see a fellow Providence Day alum become a VFL.
“It’s special. It reminded me of when I committed. He’s the next generation. I would say with Tennessee I was a good player but he’s 100 times better than I was both as a student and as a person,” Williams offered. “He’s a phenomenal human being. I’m excited for him to continue the legacy at Tennessee. Honestly I didn’t know he was going there. We talked about all the different options but I told him to not tell me till the last day. I was surprised like everyone else.”
What Williams is not surprised by is how Sanders has handled the process as one of the most decorated and sought after prospects in the class of 2025.
“That comes from parents. David Sr. and Samantha are amazing,” Williams explained. “They have done a phenomenal job of raising not just David but also his three sisters. He’s had a great head on his shoulders since the day I met him.
“His growth has come every day. He’s always had a tremendous work ethic. He’s always had a tremendous rigor for the classroom. He puts the time in. If he’s not good at something, he puts the time in. He challenges himself. I have always told hm to challenge himself. He wants to be a doctor. I told him to be better than I was in high school. I told him we have to leave the next generation better than we were. I made mistakes and I’m going to give you all the tools you need and you can pass them on the the next person after you. That’s how we have to continue to grow.”
For Sanders the growth at Tennessee will begin in December with he enrolls on Rocky Top in what Williams hopes and believes will be a great ride in orange.
“David and I will forever be connected. He’s like a little brother to me and I’m excited for him to get to experience the same love and joy that I had at Tennessee,” the two time SEC player of the year said.
