Kalen DeBoer credits preparation approach of Jalen Milroe

One of the biggest questions of the college football season is if Alabama will continue their reign of dominance following the departure of Nick Saban. Which will largely rest on the shoulders of new head coach Kalen DeBoer and quarterback Jalen Milroe.

DeBoer recently joined the Golic and Gojo show and was asked about his dual-threat QB. Revealing that his dedication and work ethic has been one of the highlights of working alongside him.

“You see that the work that he’s put in, and I know it’s well documented that he’s an early riser. He’s extremely motivated and locked in,” DeBoer said. “Comes in 4:30 in the morning and goes through his routine, but you see that paying off.”

Milroe went back and forth as Alabama’s starting quarterback early last season before officially taking over the reins of the offense against Texas. A game that the Crimson Tide may have lost in, but was followed by them running the table in their conference slate afterward. With Milroe ending the year with 3,365 total yards and 35 touchdowns to help lead Alabama to an SEC title and a College Football Playoff appearance.

But this offseason he had to take on the task of learning a new offense under DeBoer.

“You see him really now in hearing the installs, and seeing the installs, and going through it,” DeBoer expalined. “You see his execution just continue to improve, his understanding of what we’re trying to accomplish and he and I just trying to anticipate what’s going to look like on game day. A lot of communication there.”

DeBoer is known for winning at each of his head coaching stops in his career, but also for his offensive prowess. Highlighted by coaching Michael Penix during his previous two seasons at Washington where he threw for 8,572 yards and 62 touchdowns, earning a top 10 overall pick in the most recent NFL Draft.

Milroe brings a much different skillset to the table compared to Penix, regarded as one of the best overall athletes in the entire country. But an elite understanding of this year’s offensive scheme paired with DeBoer getting the most out of his new dual-threat quarterback could be a potential nightmare for defenses that face the Crimson Tide this season.

“It just seems like now he’s really getting into it deep on the questions he’s asking. It’s not just the surface-level things, it’s these things where I just appreciate how much he thinks about it, and how much work he puts into what he’s accomplished. But what he’s really looking to do this fall,” DeBoer conceded.
