Winston Watkins surprise many in the recruiting industry when he shut down his recruitment early and gave Colorado a verbal pledge in December.
The Top 100 2025 Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy was one of the first players to pick Colorado after the Buffaloes hired NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders as his head coach. And Watkins, who held offers from a slew of national powers, remains happy with his decision.
“I’m 100 percent committed to Colorado right now,” Watkins said. “I’m blessed and appreciate every blessing I’ve received on my journey. But I’m with Deion (Sanders). He’s been a big influence on me. My nickname was once Prime Time Watkins Jr. He has a gold jacket, and I’m trying to get a gold jacket.”
Watkins’ firm commitment hasn’t stopped other schools from recruiting him.
Michigan wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy made a swing through Florida in late March and extended an offer to Watkins.
“It was cool to get an offer from Michigan,” Watkins said. “I appreciate the offer. I appreciate all my blessings.”
While flipping Watkins appears to be a daunting task on the surface, Michigan does have a valuable weapon in Top 100 2024 quarterback commit Jadyn Davis, who has played with Watkins on the club 7v7 circuit this offseason.
“I know Jadyn Davis well,” Watkins said. “He was my quarterback in 7v7. He should be a really good fit for Michigan. That’s a great place for him to go. He’s different. Every throw from him is a money ball. He has nice touch and a good IQ.”
Watkins admitted that he is still doing his research on Michigan but added that Davis is recruiting him to Ann Arbor.
“I know a little bit about Michigan,” Watkins said. “But I’m still learning more. Jadyn said he wants me to slide with him to Michigan, but I don’t know. Right now, I’m with Deion.”
Watkins said he has no plans to visit other schools at this time.
At 5-foot-9, 175 pounds, Watkins is ranked as the No. 9 wide receiver and No. 49 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking. He is also ranked as the No. 7 overall prospect in the state of Florida for next cycle.
Michigan currently holds two verbal commitments in its 2025 recruiting class in On300 Miami (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna defensive back Chris Ewald and rising Buford (Ga.) High linebacker Mantrez Walker. The class is ranked No. 7 nationally with a score of 85.978.
