Freshman CB Amare Sanders has quickly made Nebraska take notice
It didn’t take long for Amare Sanders to make his Nebraska coaches and teammates take notice during his first fall camp in Lincoln.
In fact, the Huskers are now making it a point to ensure everyone else outside of the program also knows about the true freshman defensive back.
The Big Ten Network was on campus on Wednesday for its annual B1G Football Training Camp tour.
During interviews with NU defensive coordinator Tony White and linebacker John Bullock, the former three-star out of Miami (Fla.) Gulliver Prep came up unprompted.
On young defensive backs who have stood this fall, White first mentioned USC transfer Ceyair Wright. Next was Sanders.
“You’ve got Amare Sanders, who’s showing out right now,” White said.
The BTN hosts asked Bullock the same question during his interview alongside defensive lineman Nash Hutmacher. Sanders was the first name sixth-year senior mentioned.
“I could say a lot of guys on defense,” Bullock said. “You’ve got Amare Sanders, who’s stepping up really big.”
Sanders is already pushing for a spot in the CB rotation
Those comments came just 24 hours after White made it a point to drop Sanders’ name during his post-practice press conference on Tuesday. During Nebraska’s Big Red Preview practice on Aug. 3, Sanders picked off Heinrich Haarberg on the second drive of “team compete.”
White made it clear that the 6-foot-1, 175-pounder was in the mix to crack Nebraska’s 2024 cornerback depth chart.
“Amare Sanders is a guy who’s really standing out among those young guys and getting a lot of reps at corner,” the second-year Husker DC said.
A three-sport athlete in high school, Sanders had 54 tackles and two interceptions last year as a senior. He earned other offers from the likes of Florida, Florida State, Illinois, West Virginia, and Duke, but his only official visit was to Nebraska.
“It just felt like a family,” Sanders told HuskerOnline following his commitment in December. “I feel like I fit in their scheme, and I believe in Matt Rhule at Nebraska. I feel like they are building up the program where it needs to be.”
