Texas Football practice notes: Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Texas Football practice notes: Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

The news of Christian Clark‘s injury yesterday will overshadow this practice report but it didn’t steal the life out of practice. In fact, “that was the most energetic practice since Sark has been at Texas.”

So, other than Clark’s injury, the play was amazing.

A major reasoning was head coach Steve Sarkisian moved the practice into the bubble. Another reasoning for the energy, there were a ton of crazy plays being made, highlighted by a one-handed Malik Muhammad interception. “The ball wasn’t hitting the ground, it was either being caught by a receiver or a defender. Derion Gullette also had an interception on third team. There was a lot of trash talk back and forth.”

Big plays get the whole team involved and both sides, defense and offense, went wild when Muhammad made his play. That got me thinking, who has the best ball skills in the secondary? Per one source, “it’s Muhammad and Michael Taaffe with Andrew Mukuba also in the mix.”

For their part, the wide receivers made a number of plays with Silas Bolden getting the most mention.

After the practice Sark even mentioned how fun of a day it was. From the outside, it sounded like the spring game all over again. Spring games are normally a snooze fest but not the one this past April.

Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton were both mentioned again, this time as “balling.” IT asked where Collins plays when they go to base defense. In base, the nickel/Star comes off and the Sam linebacker comes on. The line in that instance is Barryn SorrellBill Norton OR Jermayne Lole-Alfred Collins. As we’ve previously reported, Trey Moore comes on as Sam.

“I don’t know where but if he keeps playing like this Broughton is getting drafted.” The source said Broughton is playing the run better than at any point in his career.

But, with all of the good news, the Clark situation does put a damper on things. We haven’t heard the extent of the injury yet but the vibes aren’t great. If he needs surgery Texas is going to have to attack the portal  for a running back. A one-year rental isn’t hard to find, but, that will have downward effects on landing a player at a more premium position. The staff simply won’t be in position to assume CJ Baxter and Clark will be 100% for 2025. First, let’s see what the diagnosis is on Clark.
