Jimmie Johnson compares Austin Dillon’s actions to Dale Earnhardt Sr. at Richmond
A lot of fans and even former drivers did not like Austin Dillon’s win last night. Jimmie Johnson didn’t seem to mind it, though. Superman, Seven-Time, whatever you call him, Johnson is picking Dillon’s side in this NASCAR fight.
Jimmie Johnson has been there and done that. And if he hasn’t been directly involved, he has at least witnessed it firsthand. So, his opinion on these matters should be taken into consideration.
Despite others disapproving of Austin Dillon wrecking Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin, Johnson doesn’t mind it. He gave it one of the highest honors in the sport – a comparison to The Intimidator himself.
“Dale Sr vibes,” Johnson posted on X.com, formerly known as Twitter.
Jimmie Johnson has spoken his piece. He is all about Austin Dillon doing whatever it took to win the race last night. In the win-and-you’re-in era of the NASCAR Playoffs, it isn’t necessarily out of line. But does that make it right?
This is going to be talked about for a while, folks. Basically, until Dillon is knocked out of the playoffs. So, get used to it.
Austin Dillon defends his win after finish at Richmond
After the race, Austin Dillon faced a somewhat hostile media center. Questions about how his spotter said to wreck Denny and why did you do this, is it fair, etc. It wasn’t the usual atmosphere in a winner’s media availability.
So, Dillon defended himself. He even called out the two guys he wrecked for their past actions.
“I’ve seen Denny and Joey make moves that have been you know, running people up the track to win,” Dillon said, calling out what he seemingly believes to be a double standard, via Matt Weaver of Sportsnaut. “This was the first opportunity in two years for me to be able to get a win, I drove in there and kept all four tires turning across the start-finish-line.
“To me, I’ve seen a lot of stuff over the years in NASCAR, where people move people, and it’s just part of our sport, you know what I mean? Remember when, you know, Joey said, short track racing, he knows what it was. In your shoes, what would you do?”
Yes, other drivers have wrecked other drivers. It happens. But the eye test alone tells you what happened Sunday night was more than a bump and run. You don’t wreck two cars with a bump and run, ideally, you don’t even wreck one.
Still, the system rewards it and we’re talking about it a day later. So, NASCAR and Austin Dillon win this time.
