WBB Recruiting update: LSU trims 2025 board entering fall

WBB Recruiting update: LSU trims 2025 board entering fall

Earlier this week, junior college forward Pania Davis committed to Florida State, therefore canceling her visit to LSU which was scheduled for Sept. 8. Davis had already taken visits to Utah, Miami, and Florida State and committed soon after.

A 6-foot-6 center, LSU had been recruiting Davis for the past year, initially considering adding her to the 2024 class, but that was not possible, so it was quickly decided she would return to New Mexico Junior College for one more year. After the 2023-24 season, Davis and LSU continued to talk, but the Tigers wanted to continue to evaluate her over the summer. There are a couple of junior college prospect events LSU would be able to watch her at and further evaluate and recruit her.

Throughout July, LSU continued to recruit her and set the official visit date, but more teams jumped into the mix and began setting official visits. As LSU continued to watch Davis, the Tigers’ staff was not blown away from her performances in July, which complicated things. Davis was good enough to be a take, but not someone LSU was willing to sell out for.

Meanwhile, Florida State and Miami turned up the heat in a major way, raising the price, and as a result the Tigers bowed out.

What’s next for LSU in the 2025 class?

Davis was one of the six players LSU had scheduled for visits this fall and the only junior college target. The Tigers already have Bella Hines committed and have official visits set for Devine Bourrage, ZaKiyah Johnson, Grace Knox, and Ayla McDowell. Aaliyah Chavez’ date is believed to be set, but not announced publicly.

With those five targets and one commit, I think the heat is turned up in a significant way with Davis out of the picture. I said before that LSU is in a good spot for Divine Bourrage, ZaKiyah Johnson, and Chavez right now and they will continue to push for Knox and McDowell as 6-foot-2 athletes. We’ll have more information in the coming weeks with visits on the way in September, but for now, I think LSU gets a few major difference makers in this class.

As for the future of the center position, Davis would have been a depth piece behind Sa’Myah Smith and Aalyah Del Rosario for two years, so not getting her is not a huge hit. They’ll likely look to get a young player from the portal to hold them over until the 2027 class where Louisiana has produced one of the best players in the country in 6-foot-5 center Caroline Bradley from Oak Grove, Louisiana.

Either way, Davis was not a player LSU was going to put all its chips in for at any point, and it doesn’t change much about the 2025 class for LSU.
