Top 100 OT Nathan Roy breaks down his top three; previews Michigan State official visit
2024 Mukwonago (WI) High School offensive tackle Nathan Roy is a recruit in his class holding over 20 offers including Ohio State, Oklahoma, Southern California, Oklahoma, Penn State, and more. He narrowed an earlier top seven list to three schools in Michigan State, UCLA, and Minnesota on May 30.
Roy is ranked a four-star, the No. 158 overall recruit, the No. 12 offensive tackle, and the No. 1 recruit in Wisconsin, according to the 2024 On3 Industry Rankings. On3 ranks the 6-foot-5, 270-pounder even higher, as the No. 48 overall recruit in his class and the No. 7 offensive tackle in the country.
“It was just how I felt about the staff (at each school),” Roy said of his final three. “I obviously have great relationships with all of them. I have had great conversations, plenty of great conversations.”
“It was a little stressful, but I think the best part to me was just getting to see everything,” Roy said. “Not only getting to see how schools do things, but why they do things. Seeing how they operate and go about their business. I got plenty of different perspectives from a lot of different schools, so it’s been a fun recruitment.”
Roy has taken one official visit, to UCLA in May, so far. He will visit Michigan State on June 9, followed by an official to Minnesota on June 16. He will announce his final decision on June 20.
“I am still deciding on (his final school),” Roy said. “I am looking forward to a great official visit at Michigan State, and having a great one at Minnesota too, so it is still up for grabs right now. I am just waiting for my official visits before I close the books and make my decision.”
Michigan State
Roy visited Michigan State for the first time on March 28. He was able to take in a spring practice and get a quick tour.
“The way their culture is,” Roy said of the Spartans. “I like their culture. I have great relationships with Coach Kap, Coach Lail, and Coach Tucker. I had a fun time up there when I went for my unofficial visit, so I can’t wait for my official visit.”
Assistant head coach, offensive line coach, and run game coordinator Chris Kapilovic has developed a strong relationship with the four-star, talking weekly.
“We have a pretty good relationship,” Roy said. “We talk weekly. Since it’s not football season right now, and their spring ball is over. We just talk about stuff outside of football, getting to know each other outside of football. That has been the most crucial part for me, learning not just football but outside of it, and the guys you are going to hang with and the coaches your going to come into, so I have a great relationship with Coach Kap.”
Roy also keeps in close contact with Spartan graduate assistant Jacob Lail, who grew up in Wisconsin.
“I talk to them just about an equal amount,” Roy said of the Spartan coaches. “Sometimes I talk to them both at the same time or on separate occasions. I have a great relationship with Coach Lail too, he is great. We talk about a lot of things. Some things not about football, just life and everything else. (We talk) about when you are out of season and how things are.”
The four-star also sat down with Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker while in East Lansing.
“I like Coach Tucker,” Roy said. “He is a great guy. I like what he stands for. I like how he coaches and how he approaches things so I have a good relationship with Coach Tucker as well.”
As for the official visit, Roy is just looking to spend more time with the Michigan State staff and players, seeing a different side of the personalities in person.
“Just spending more time with the guys,” Roy said. “Getting a better feel and a better vibe. Spending the full 48 hours with the players and coaches, you feel more of the vibe outside of practice and how they go about things in the summer, too.”
UCLA
Roy grew up on the West Coast before moving to Wisconsin. When UCLA offered the four-star, they quickly found themselves in the top group. His older brother Benjamin Roy is a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman for the Bruins.
“I am pretty fond of UCLA, not being from Wisconsin, and having a brother there,” Roy said. “I had a great time at UCLA. It was a great OV. I got to see things I didn’t get to see when I went there unofficially so it was a great time.”
“I transferred from Las Vegas, Nevada, but I bounced around a decent amount,” Roy said. “I was born in California, and I lived in Arizona, Nevada too, and now I am here.”
The UCLA offer was one that stood out to Roy with his brother there, and the brand on the West Coast.
“It was a great feeling being offered by them,” Roy said. “Not just football but the hierarchy there, with academics and how set I would be with that degree.”
Roy keeps in close communication with Tim Drevno, the Bruins offensive line coach, along with head coach Chip Kelly and graduate assistant Ali’i Niumatalolo.
“I talk to Coach Drev a lot,” Roy said. “Coach Ali is the graduate assistant, and I talk to Coach Chip Kelly the head coach. I talk to them a decent amount. They joined the party kind of late but have done a really good job making up for that lost time.”
“Coach Drev is already really fond of my family,” Roy said. “He knows stuff about us so with him recruiting me, it has been a lot of fun.”
Roy has also spent a lot of time with head coach Chip Kelly.
“I like Coach Kelly,” Roy said. “I got to talk to him on my OV. Spent some time with him and he is really likeable. I like the way he goes about things. I like his approach too.”
Minnesota
The last visit will go to Minnesota, the school that has recruited him the longest of the three. Roy keeps in contact with the Gophers offensive line coach Brian Callahan and head Coach PJ Fleck.
“I like Minnesota,” Roy said. “I like their coach, Coach Cal. Coach Fleck too. I liked the way they that they rolled out things as a whole, as a unit. I got to spend time with some of their OL guys and get to know them.”
“I have a good relationship with everyone there,” Roy said. “Coach Cal stops at my school all the time, so it’s been great with Minnesota.”
