Newsstand: Two Notre Dame running backs named Doak Walker candidates

Newsstand: Two Notre Dame running backs named Doak Walker candidates

Notre Dame running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price are preseason candidates for the Doak Walker Award, the Irish announced Tuesday.

Love, a sophomore, and Price, a junior, are listed among 88 candidates for the award. One of them is reigning winner Ollie Gordon, who returned to Oklahoma State and will look to become the third two-time honoree in the award’s history.

Love and Price will be 1A and 1B in Notre Dame’s backfield this season, with the former lining up at various spots and the latter playing a traditional running back role. They combined for 657 rushing yards and 6 total touchdowns as Audric Estimé‘s backups in 2023.

Breakout year coming for Boubacar Traore?

Notre Dame DL coach Al Washington said sophomore DE Boubacar Traore is “ready to roll,” largely because of offseason dedication to his body. He’s gained weight but is also playing faster.

Quote of the day

“I just try to put guys in the best position that I think they can be successful with. Sometimes it’s what they do most naturally from a physical standpoint — their build, the way they are. Like Aamil, I kept him on the right side because structurally he’s just a lot cleaner when he works from the right side, for whatever reason. And then Tosh being over there for the bowl game was, I thought him and Billy [Schrauth] would be a good matchup, like together. I thought they would really mesh well. And then I thought Charles would really mesh well with Pat [Coogan] on the other side. So, you’re really just trying to figure that out. I don’t try to pigeonhole a guy in one spot or the other.”
