Domani Jackson on upholding commitment to Alabama: ‘The A doesn’t change’

There were plenty of changes at Alabama this offseason with coach Nick Saban‘s sudden retirement, but USC transfer Domani Jackson was not one of them.

Jackson committed to Alabama out of the NCAA transfer portal prior to Saban’s retirement, but he didn’t opt to pull his pledge and head elsewhere despite the change in leadership.

“I mean truthfully the ‘A’ doesn’t change, you know?” Jackson said on Tuesday, by way of explanation. “It’s still a powerhouse, run college football. I just wanted to have a change and reset my college career, and I felt like this was the best opportunity for me.”

Jackson got a close-up look at the Alabama program during the Rose Bowl week of preparations, attending a couple practices as he weighed his transfer destination. What he saw was half the equation.

The other half was what he experienced first-hand.

Playing at USC, Domani Jackson had the chance to go up against eventual Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer while he was still coaching at Washington.

“I mean I played against them, so I knew what they are capable of,” Jackson said. “You could just go down his road as a winning coach, and I knew the coaches he was going to bring in were going to be great.”

Now Jackson will get the chance to suit up for that powerhouse program he felt was his best opportunity all along. He’ll have the luxury of working opposite DeBoer’s side of expertise, the offense.

That’ll make for an interesting fall camp as the defense gets used to it, but it’ll also present quite the challenge for opposing defenses, Domani Jackson predicts.

“I mean they can attack you down the field, in the hole shots, running backs, tight ends, they do it all,” he said. “So it’s going to be hard.”
