Lucky Charms: What we’re hearing on Notre Dame QB commit Deuce Knight (Aug. 6)

Here are today’s Lucky Charms, a Monday-Thursday insider notes article on Notre Dame football recruiting.

*** This is a situation that continues to develop, and it seems like with each passing day (and it can be an hourly situation), there’s some new rumor that comes out. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past week and a half, then you will have missed that Lucedale (Miss.) George County’s Deuce Knight, a Notre Dame commit since last September who ranks as the No. 38 overall player and No. 7 quarterback nationally according to the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking, visited Auburn July 27, and while I haven’t independently confirmed this myself yet, I’m pretty sure that he visited Ole Miss last week as well. His parents took both trips, too.

And things are pretty serious in terms of how much Knight is looking at these SEC programs. It really feels that a flip switched overnight, from Knight going to posting messages publicly to recruit Derek Meadows to ND to the elite signal-caller looking like a prime flip candidate.

But in terms of the latest buzz as of Tuesday, it remains status quo from a Notre Dame standpoint. Does that mean I think Knight sticks with the Irish? Honestly, no. But the Irish staff is continuing to work on Knight while having an understanding about the situation as a whole. Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman, Gino Guidugli, Chad Bowden and I’m sure a couple others have stayed in contact as usual, and I’m also told the staff will be on a Zoom call with Knight today (unsure of the exact time).

There had been rumors that Knight would decommit total and potentially flip to Auburn as well. I’m told that’s not going to happen, but the day isn’t over, so we’ll see. There’s also chatter of Knight making a move later this week. But from what my sources tell me, Knight plans to take this decision into the season. That would be ideal from a Notre Dame standpoint, as the Irish can make a lot of noise on the field if they beat Texas A&M Week 1, while Auburn hasn’t had a double-digit winning season since 2017. Ole Miss has to be mentioned in Knight’s recruitment as well; the Rebels will continue to target Knight as long as they remain without a 2025 quarterback.

To wrap this up — no, I don’t feel particularly optimistic that Knight sticks with Notre Dame. But the Irish have been recruiting this young man for a year and a half and have hosted him on campus countless times. They’re going to see this through, while covering their own bases in the process.
