Laeticia Amihere’s Olympics have come to an end following the group stage, but A’ja Wilson’s spectacular play has Team USA poised for another gold medal. Find out how to watch the American’s remaining games.
As expected, since they haven’t lost a game since 1992, the United States went 3-0 in group play to extend their Olympic winning streak to 58 games. The Americans now move on to the knockout round.
For Wilson, the Olympics have been another star turn. She is the lone subject of a new Nike commercial, Snoop Dogg has frequently worn a shirt with Wilson’s picture, and she has dominated on the court.
Wilson is currently averaging 20.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, 2.0 steals, and 2.7 assists. She’s on pace to break the US record for scoring average and block average (Breanna Stewart is also averaging 20.3 points and 2.0 blocks).
USA beat Japan 102-76, Belgium 87-74, and Germany 87-68. Wilson’s stats were:
Japan: 26 minutes*, 24 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks
Belgium: 34 minutes*, 23 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists
Germany: 24 minutes*, 14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks, 2 assists
Team USA’s upcoming schedule, if they keep winning, is:
August 7 – Nigeria (3:30 pm ET, USA/Streaming)
August 9 – Semifinals vs Serbia/Australia (11:30 am ET or 3:00 pm ET, NBC/streaming or USA/streaming)
August 11 – Medal round (5:30 am ET Bronze Medal game, USA/streaming; 9:30 am ET Gold Medal game, NBC/streaming)
Canada struggled to an 0-3 record in group play and its Olympics are over. The Canadians lost 75-54 to France, 70-65 to Australia, and 79-70 to Nigeria.
Amihere averaged 2.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 5.7 minutes per game. Her game splits were:
France: 2 minutes, no stats
Australia: 2 minutes, 2 rebounds
Nigeria: 13 minutes, 7 points, 11 rebounds, block
