Miami Hurricanes Aug. 3 fall drills: News and notes from the practice field

The Miami Hurricanes returned to the practice field in shorts and shells on Saturday morning, and here are your day’s news and notes (also note that per UM’s request we do not report on depth charts or injured players/those wearing red jerseys).

The team did a lot of individual and walkthrough drills in the portion open to the media, and it was a bit more sloppy with some dropped balls on both sides including a point-blank drop by Sam Brown on a short route. Of note is in the inside run drills the offensive line/running backs won the majority of the time. Freshman RB Jordan Lyle continues to impress with his agility and quickness through the line and could factor in behind Damien Martinez. At one point he threw a stiff arm on Cole McConathy, who had broken through the line for a point-blank tackle, and McConathy wound up on the ground with Lyle speeding away from him. Chris Johnson also showed off his speed on one rep, bouncing from the middle to the outside and breaking totally free.

In the WR vs. DB period (3 WRs against 3 DBs) Cam Ward got limited reps and connected on two of three passes, with the completions short checkdowns and the incompletion a dart overthrown into double coverage.

With Emory Williams at QB his first pass saw Riley Williams wide open down the middle for an easy TD when the guys in the secondary seemed confused who had him. Another of his reps saw Isaiah Horton beat Daryl Porter deep down the left side, with Horton drawing pass interference on the play as well. On another of Williams’ throws Xavier Restrepo came back on a back shoulder throw to make a great catch with Isaiah Taylor in coverage. He came down with it at the one-yard line for a gain of 34.

Judd Anderson had an underthrow to Ny Carr that Myles Mooyoung made up ground on and went up for what seemed should have been an easy interception … except Carr went up higher than Mooyoung and came down with the ball even though he wasn’t in great position. Just a great effort catch by Carr. Anderson had a late, deep off-target throw that wound up out of bounds but the play saw Taylor draw a flag trying to cover Ray Ray Joseph. Anderson had another deep pass intended for Joseph, who beat Dylan Day by a step, but the pass came late and wasn’t on target.

There were a couple of reps where the secondary had great blanket coverage. On one of them Anderson didn’t even bother to throw it.

Zaquan Patterson also had a physical pass breakup on a pass intended for Carr down the middle on a throw from Anderson.
