Initial takeaways from Texas’ second fall practice of 2024

Inside Texas was on hand for UT’s second fall practice for 2024 on Thursday. Our Eric Nahlin and Joe Cook are on the scene for the latest practice report and takeaways.

This was a far, far shorter window than what we got on Wednesday. Like 10 minutes compared to 45 minutes. But we will have all the information you’re looking on insider practice reports in the coming days.

*Barryn Sorrell lead the team in Horn Jacks. As Paul Wadlington noted with Quinn Ewers yesterday, Sorrell was 5-for-5 with the spelling of H-O-R-N-S.

*Three offensive and three defensive players entered practice without their helmet likely so the managers could install in-helmet comms devices in their helmets: Ewers, Arch Manning, Trey Owens, Anthony Hill Jr, Jaylon Guilbeau, and Derek Williams

*RB Cedric Baxter is as big as he needs to be. He has the lower body of 240-pound running back.

*RB Tre Wisner has that slasher/sprinter build. He has the mentality to pound it, but he’s likely a find the crease style runner.

*The skill players were working on the strip drill early in the practice session. Ball security a must in this offense.

*Punt return rotation (in order): Silas Bolden, Johntay Cook, Isaiah Bond, Matthew Golden , which was a part of the punt return blocking work; as far as where to return it. Absolute basics, but Cook is a natural on punt return.

*Texas RB coach Tashard Choice absolutely loved a Tyanthony Smith rep during the special teams portion. Smith getting some early run on STs. If it had been live, Bolden might’ve housed it.

*Over with the defensive tackles, Kenny Baker was working with his position under the blocking tent. Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton remain the top two at the position, leading the rest of the crew. Tia Savea, Bill Norton, Jermayne Lole, Aaron Bryant, Jaray Bledsoe, and Sydir Mitchell were in the second tier.

*The DTs worked on staying low, moving their feet, then reading and reacting to make contact with a dummy over on the side of the drill.
