10 QUESTIONS: Breakout USC Players, DeAndre Carter, Dakoda Fields, Marcelles Williams, Justin Tauanu’u, 2024 LB Class + More

On Sunday Night (5/21), our Subscribers submitted questions for THE LATEST edition of the WeAreSC Football AND Recruiting Q&A.

This is a feature we did weekly throughout the season and will continue up until the February 1, 2024 signing period.

All questions were submitted on our “WeAreSC Members Only” Forum.

WEARESC SUBSCRIBER QUESTIONS

Why does it seem that Out-of-State prospects seem more interested than local kids in playing for this USC staff?

Probably because each time a kid from out of state visits USC, it’s a bigger story than the local kid who’s visited 10+ times. There’s also an element of the narrative about the USC defense lurking in the background with local kids. This may even apply to West Coast targets.

A local kid hit me up recently and said, “When we start getting more commitments, we’ll see the narrative start to shift.”

just know there are plenty of top SoCal kids ready to jump onboard with USC. At some point by the end of July you’ll see what I meant by that comment.

What’s going on with zabien brown? I see a lot of people saying he’s a lost cause at this point and that other teams lead.

USC gets Zabien Brown on campus for his official visit next weekend. Not sure who “A lot of people” are, but Zabien is definitely still strongly considering USC. Won’t surprise me at all if Marcelles Williams, Dakoda Fields and Zabien are the three 2024 cornerbacks USC signs. As of today, I’d wager on USC likely getting two of those three anyway.

My other wager is USC will likely have the two Safeties and three Cornerbacks committed by the end of July. Probably much closer to the beginning of July with four of them. I’ve been told USC just isn’t willing to let recruiting play out into late Fall with several positions.

Is Justin Tauanuu the OL leaning the most to USC?

I’d say DeAndre Carter and Justin Tauanu’u are the most likely OL to commit to USC at this point. Obviously June is a huge month and a lot will be determined in the coming weeks.

You think USC has a solid chance to beat Utah for Isaiah Garcia?

I think USC has a solid shot with any offensive target taking an official visit. That’s obviously not overly revealing, but it’s definitely a realistic perspective.

From what you hear from players on the USC football team this past spring, who are your two breakout players this season? One on offense and one on defense.

I’m guessing many would expect me to add Anthony Lucas as my pick on defense, and he would definitely meet the your criteria, but I’m gonna go with CB Jacobe Covington. I went with Covington because not many would’ve expected that. He’s worthy of the mention, though.

On offense there’s only one that jumps off the charts, and that’s Zachariah Branch. USC added a lot of future stars on offense this offseason. At some point Makai Lemon will be that guy.

What’s going on with Isaiah McMorris? Are we still recruiting him?

USC isn’t among his top schools.

When does USC’s Fall Camp open?

End of July, but I haven’t asked for an exact date. Perhaps Erik, Marc, Greg or Chris know.

What players do you think the staff will try to get on campus from the Elite 11?

As many of the guys they’re recruiting as possible. I don’t have an Elite 11 roster yet. When we do and we’re closer to the event, we’ll publish an article. Makes zero sense to do this three weeks prior to the event. There will be more guys in town for the June 16-18 OT7 7v7 Finals. We’ll publish an article for that, too.

Did Lincoln even pursue Julian Sayin?

If we haven’t written anything about USC pursuing, chances are extremely low….that applies to all kids.

Qhat is Duce Robinson up to right now?

He was playing baseball in Arizona last weekend with three other future USC Trojans. Wide Receiver signee Ja’Kobi Lane, Catcher signee Augie Lopez from Loyola HS and 2025 baseball Outfielder commit Walter Urbon also from Loyola HS.

What’s the hardest game on the schedule based on what we know now?

Dylan Brashier and I talked about that on Friday. I chose Oregon, because Oregon’s good and Autzen is an exceptionally hard venue for opposing teams….especially if you’re USC or Washington.

Scott how many linebackers do you think we add in this year’s USC class? Seems like there are some good ones in California.

Brian Odom would be fired up with a Linebacker class of Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa and Jordan Lockhart. Add in Tyanthony Smith and he’d be ecstatic.

You just mentioned Dakoda Fields, is there a 2nd player who you think USC has a legit chance of getting despite most not believing USC has a legitimate shot?

Dre’lon Miller is another. By no means would imply he’s a lock, but USC’s in a good spot as we approach his June 16-18 official visit and June 29 commitment announcement.
