5-star OL Josh Petty clears up ‘concerns,’ closes in on decision after trip to Florida State

Five-star offensive lineman Josh Petty was back at Florida State this weekend, following a visit to Georgia Tech on Saturday.

According to the On3 Industry Ranking, Petty is the 29th-best player in the country, and the second-best at his position.

“I’ve been going back to a couple of places, and I just wanted to go back to somewhere special,” Petty said Sunday after wrapping up his trip to Florida State. “You know the OV (official visit) left an impression; I just wanted to get back up here and feel that same thing.”

Petty said he came away from this latest visit with a familiar feeling.

“I mean, the same impression that was left on me on the official visit is still here after this visit,” the Georgia product said. “FSU is a great school, they’re really special, and they hold that place in my heart. They’ve been with me along the recruiting journey. Coach [Alex] Atkins has been there.”

That bond with offensive coordinator and line coach Alex Atkins has gone a long way back in Petty’s recruitment. And after watching Atkins coach at practice Sunday morning, Petty clearly likes what he sees from the Seminoles coach.

“Coach Atkins definitely knows what he is doing,” Petty said. “The guys in his room are bought in, they can see his vision, they can see how clearly he does it, and they can tell he can teach. Him and Coach Fertitta (senior analyst Gabe Fertitta) run a great little duo in that room. He’s up there doing the big stuff, and you can go to Coach Fertitta with whatever questions you need.”

Another reason Petty visited Florida State on Sunday was to iron out a few “concerns” he has with the program. He did not discuss the specific concerns with the media, however, he did say that FSU coach Mike Norvell straightened everything out.

“The relationship has been great,” the five-star lineman said. “He’s been crazy excited, the dude is just running around this building, and it’s been great. He’s very professional, he’s a great head coach, he’s got that vision and that dream for his team, and he’s real. That’s one thing; he’s very real. He looks you in the eyes and tells you his dream and that he wants to coach you.

“That was kinda what we talked about, him wanting to coach me, a couple of concerns we have, and just getting all things sorted out.”

Petty will now enter decision mode, which will come on Aug. 12. He stated after his visit that all five schools he took official visits to — Florida State, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Ohio State and Stanford — are all still in it.

As for the wait on his process, Petty cited that it is a, “40-year decision,” and that has “been holding me up.”

One aspect that the Seminoles do have going for them is the fact that his sister is a student at Florida State, adding to how special Tallahassee is to him.

“Getting my sister here was huge,” he said. “She kinda never knew where she wanted to go to school, and she kinda figured it out here. It’s gotta mean something here, and it’s gotta mean they have something special here. Her coming here has been huge.

“I love my sister, she’s been great. Getting back with her and visiting her on this campus. It’s been a big part and was a big part of the ‘Noles for me.”

Florida State currently leads for Perty on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine with an 80 percent chance of landing him. However, Georgia Tech has been making a strong push in his recruitment.
