Recruiting Notebook: Kansas State on commit watch
KANSAS STATE COMMIT WATCH
As first reported by Drew Galloway of KSO, Kansas State is on commit watch on the football front.
It would be their sixth member of the class once it is announced, joining a group that already consists of quarterback Blake Barnett, linemen Ryan Howard and Gus Hawkins, running back John Price and linebacker Jake Stonebraker.
While the Wildcats have long been considered the favorite for the target, there is a bit of a surprise element to it since June official visits are right around the corner. We’re expecting K-State to secure the latest addition on Monday.
TOUGHEST POSITIONS TO RECRUIT
When speaking to a source connected to Kansas State recently, I asked for an update and a recruiting status check on a variety of positions. And a growing trend came into picture for me about particular positions.
It always seemed like the process was either slower or at least more difficult at the same position groups year in and year out for K-State. Was that a case of a position coach just not being as apt or is there something more to it?
Because one of them was the edge position, and I consider Buddy Wyatt to be a quality recruiter, I just asked if it was tougher to recruit because of the value placed on it. After all, it was easy to draw the connection to how prized they are at the NFL level and drafted highly because of it.
It was confirmed that it is just a spot that is tougher for the Wildcats to hone in on when it comes to top targets. Identification and knowing who to chase isn’t necessarily an issue, but remaining in the game for those atop the board is a mighty challenge.
Due to that, we anticipate it continuing to be a developmental spot for Kansas State. After all, that was the name of the game for some of their better ones in recent years, like Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Wyatt Hubert and perhaps Nate Matlack if he lives up to his potential.
The same source also noted that the cornerback spot brought on similar issues. That is an increasingly tougher and tougher spot to track. However, Van Malone and the Wildcats have seemingly overcome that by finding high school gems, the use of the junior college market and the transfer portal.
EDWARDS AND K-STATE
A tight end was not always on the wish list for K-State.
That was especially the case when the first top target Carson Bruhn picked Kansas over Minnesota and the Wildcats. Because Kansas State had landed four high school tight ends the prior two classes, they were content on passing on the spot in the 2024 cycle.
That was until assistant Brian Lepak spotted one in Oklahoma that made great development and turned his head a ton from the last time that he saw him at camp last June. That is Wagoner High product Witt Edwards.
It won’t be easy for K-State to sign him, as both Oklahoma State and Iowa State are strongly embedded in his recruitment as well. However, we’re under the impression that he is genuinely interested in Kansas State and plans to consider them just as much.
The expectation is that he will make official visits to all three of Manhattan, Stillwater and Ames before making his college choice.
