Michigan State offered class of 2024 tight end Benjamin Blackburn of Miami (FL) Christopher Columbus School on May 6. The 6-foot-6, 230-pounder was offered by tight ends coach Ted Gilmore, as Spartan offensive coordinator/ quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson stopped by the school.
“Coach Johnson came by school to watch practice and then coach Gilmore offered me over the phone,” Blackburn told SpartanMag.com. “Coach Gilmore said that he heard great things from coach Johnson and likes what he sees with my film. He thinks I am fit for an offense run like that of Michigan State.”
Blackburn has kept in touch with Gilmore since the offer, planning a summer unofficial visit to East Lansing. He does not have a date set just yet.
“I have been talking to Michigan State since the offer,” Blackburn said. “Coach Gilmore came down to watch practice and we are in the works of setting up an unofficial visit.”
Blackburn has yet to receive a 2023 On3 Ranking at this time. The 2024 tight end holds additional offers from Pittsburgh, Louisville, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Arizona, Ole Miss, Maryland, and others. He will take official visits to Boston College and Duke in June.
Jason’s take:
Michigan State signed one tight end in the 2023 class, in four-star Brennan Parachek of Dexter (MI). Gilmore and the Spartans will likely look to take two in the 2024 class if the right pair were to come together.
Michigan State will host three-star tight end Eric Karner of Itasca (IL) on June 2. Karner included MSU in his top five alongside Alabama, Iowa, Florida, and Texas A&M. Miami (FL) also offered just after the top list. Karner visited East Lansing earlier this spring for a practice.
The Spartans will also welcome three-star Karsen Konkel of Pinckneyville (IL) on June 16. Illinois, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Indiana, and others have also offered Konkel.
Michigan State will also welcome three-star Decker DeGraaf of Glendora (CA) on June 16. DeGraaf will also take official visits to Utah, Washington, and Arkansas.
