Patrick Murphy congratulates Alabama baseball on fantastic season

Alabama has had a ton of success on the diamond this season, both in softball and baseball. Patrick Murphy has his team in a Super Regional against Northwestern, looking to stave off elimination. Interim head coach Jason Jackson will be entering the NCAA Tournament next week and has his team playing really well.

With everything Alabama has been through the past few weeks, they are somehow going to be a regional host when the bracket is revealed. Murphy wanted to take some time to recognize the baseball team’s accomplishments and did so when speaking to ESPN’s Saturday night broadcast.

“I got to say congrats to the Alabama boy’s baseball team,” Murphy said. “They’re having one hell of a good year. And I’m really, really proud of that team.”

Softball has been successful for a while under Murphy, continually making the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City. Baseball has not had the same success, not making it to Omaha since the 1999 season. Going a step further back, they are projected to host for the first time since 2006.

You would not have believed any of this was possible when Brad Bohannon was fired. There has been plenty of controversy surrounding the Alabama baseball program since then but they have responded in a big way — both in the regular season and in the SEC Tournament.

Series wins over Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss closed out the regular season before heading over to Hoover. A 2-2 overall record included a win over arch-rival Auburn, sending the Tigers home. While it did not result in an SEC Tournament championship, a solid week for Johnson.

With Selection Monday coming up, Johnson will now wait to see which three teams are likely heading to the Joe for a regional. A potential Super Regional matchup will be revealed as well, even if it’s likely to be away from home.

Murphy and Johnson will be hoping both teams are playing next weekend. Baseball will be no matter what, getting their road to Omaha underway. For softball, it would mean they were able to take down Northwestern and advance to the WCWS.

Either way, fantastic overall seasons for both Alabama teams. While head coach Nick Saban and football might be king in Tuscaloosa, athletic director Greg Byrne has seen plenty of success from his Olympic sports. Few are more exciting than baseball and softball on the diamond.
