Commit Impact: What landing top WR target Phillip Wright means for Michigan
Michigan scored an important recruiting win when three-star Destrehan (La.) High wide receiver Phillip Wright announced his commitment on Saturday evening.
The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder picked U-M over fellow finalists Georgia and LSU.
Wright is the 16th member of Michigan’s 2025 recruiting class.
Here are some quick takes on what Wright’s commitment means for the Wolverines.
1. Michigan is continuing to stay hot on the recruiting trail. After a brief lull, the Wolverines picked up two massive commitments earlier this week in Top 100 prospects Andrew Olesh and Ivan Taylor. Now, Michigan has added Wright to the fold as well. Michigan is just outside of the Top 10 in the national recruiting rankings but will have a chance to move up very soon as the BBQ at The Big House is set to welcome in U-M leans like Top 100 wide receiver Andrew Marsh and On300 cornerback Jayden Sanders.
2. So how did this recruitment happen? Michigan offered Wright back in the fall and made him a top priority throughout the offseason. Michigan appeared to be right at the top of the list for Wright following his visit for the spring game. However, schools like Baylor and Georgia Tech also pushed and Georgia kept him warm. Michigan really took command of this recruitment after his official visit last month, hence why I put in an On3 Prediction. Wright indicated that U-M would be the pick, and he obviously shut things down today.
3. While Michigan landed Wright, they are going to have to fight to keep him. LSU has missed on some key targets at the wide receiver position and have circled back to Wright. If the Tigers get more aggressive throughout the fall, Michigan will be in for quite the battle. LSU does a tremendous job of keeping local kids at home, and the Tigers have historically recruited really well at Destrehan. The LSU threat is something we’ll have to monitor until signing day.
4. With that said, Michigan does have a direct tie to Louisiana on staff in wide receivers coach and lead recruiter Ron Bellamy. The relationship with Bellamy played a massive role in Wright siding with the Wolverines, and that bond isn’t just going to disappear. Bellamy did a fantastic job of prioritizing Wright throughout the process and building personal connections with Wright and everybody around him. If there is one man that can keep Wright away from LSU, it’s Bellamy.
5. Bellamy’s Louisiana roots are really starting to pay off this cycle. Wright is the third commit from the Bayou State, joining On300 wide receiver Jacob Washington and On300 running back Jasper Parker. Bellamy played big roles with all three and also deserves credit for identifying them before their recruitments really picked up. It’s always going to be tough for Michigan to land Louisiana talent, but Bellamy’s recent success is setting up the Wolverines to win a recruitment or two every cycle moving forward.
6. Wright is ranked as a three-star on three of the four major recruiting services. The only service that has him listed as a four-star recruit is Rivals, which has him outside of their Rivals250. I tend to agree with the services on Wright. I have him in that high three-star/low four-star range. Wright has game changing speed but is still raw as a pure receiver. If he can refine his game as a senior, he’ll have a chance to see a significant bump.
7. As mentioned, Wright has elite speed. Wright clocked a blazing 10.46 100-meter this offseason, which means he can be a game changer in Michigan’s offense. Wright was primarily recruited as a slot, but he’s also a guy you can line up on the outside and stretch the field vertically. Wright is also capable of returning kicks and punts and being utilized on jet sweeps. There is a lot you can do with a guy like Wright. With that said, Bellamy really has to work with him on the technical part of his game.
8. Michigan now has two wide receiver commits in Wright and Washington. The Wolverines plan on taking three at the position this cycle, which means the focus will really turn to the aforementioned Marsh. Again, Marsh is set to make another visit at the end of the month before announcing a decision in August. Closing with Marsh is the top priority. However, Michigan would make room for another elite big body like Derek Meadows or Jerome Myles, who is also set to be at the BBQ at The Big House.
