4-star WR Daylan McCutcheon goes 1-on-1 with Warchant about FSU commitment

4-star WR Daylan McCutcheon goes 1-on-1 with Warchant about FSU commitment

PLANO, Texas — Florida State landed one of the top wide receivers in the 2025 class on Saturday as Daylan McCutcheon chose the Seminoles over Southern Cal, Texas and Ohio State.

This is one high-profile recruitment that came down to the wire, as the majority of people at McCutcheon’s commitment ceremony did not even know what he had decided. The blue-chip receiver told Warchant he wasn’t even sure what he was going to do until right before he walked in the building.

“Literally, like a couple of minutes ago, I’m not gonna lie,” McCutcheon said of his decision. “I was obviously [emotional], I was crying to my dad, just talking to him. Like, I want to be able to go to Florida State and be able to make a big impact. The opportunity with Coach [Mike] Norvell. Just, I mean, I had to talk to him. I got on the call with Coach Norvell, and we just made it happen.”

McCutcheon said that call with Florida State’s head coach took place just moments before McCutcheon told the world he would be a Seminole. And, as always, the fifth-year head coach was hyped.

When asked how FSU beat out the competition for his commitment, the Lucas, Texas, standout said the family atmosphere in the Seminoles’ program was the difference. It was something he saw from the first time he visited last summer.

“The biggest aspect is just the family-oriented team — just the way Coach Norvell is and Coach [Ron] Dugans is,” McCutcheon said. “That just pulled the most out of me as a person. … I know Coach Norvell will be able to push me each and every day. Just with everybody there, the coaches that believe in me. After they watched me at a camp last summer, I just knew that that was the place.”

While Dugans ended up being the main recruiter for McCutcheon, he also developed a special bond with Norvell and tight ends coach Chris Thomsen, both of whom are from Texas.

“It feels great. … It’s a lot of weight that’s off my chest now,” McCutcheon said. “I mean, it feels real good that Coach Norvell is from this area, obviously, with Coach Thomsen as well. And knowing that my family’s from Florida [and] they’ll make it out to my games.”

Now that he has committed to Florida State, McCutcheon wants to start helping the Seminoles pick up even more top prospects for 2025.

When asked who he has in mind, the four-star wideout immediately said four-star linebacker and Ohio State commit Riley Pettijohn, as well as five-star wide receiver Kaliq Lockett. His pitch to them is already in the works.

“You’ve got big dreams ahead,” McCutcheon said he’ll tell them. “Just be able to put your head down, be able to work hard by going to Florida State. Obviously, the sky’s the limit. You’re gonna be able to accomplish many things at Florida State.”
