4-star Miami TE commit getting offseason work with NFL vets

Leo (Ind.) Miami four-star tight end commit Brock Schott has made the most of his summer.

The 6-foot-3.5, 215-pound consensus four-star prospect has done little regarding his football recruitment outside of his official visit to Miami the first weekend of June and told CaneSport he has “pretty much” shut down his recruitment outside of an occasional text from Ohio State or Auburn’s staff.

So instead, Schott has focused preparing his body ahead of his senior season and refining his skillset, the latter of which came with the help of a handful of NFL veterans.

Schott spent time in the Tampa Bay area earlier this summer with a group of people from his 7-on-7 team working out with All-Pro Bengals safety Jessie Bates III, Falcons receiver Austin Mack and Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn. There were a handful of other NFL players Schott wasn’t able to speak with, although he was able to watch them run through drills and demonstrate different exercises.

“They just kind of explained that once you get to the higher levels that playing tight end isn’t just about running your routes,” Schott said. “You have to be able to read the defense, read the zone, find the soft spot and learn how to sit. When you break in front of or behind the defender and stuff like that. They were giving us pointers, tips on how we can be better at the game and stuff like that.”

Schott has otherwise focused on his school’s offseason strength and conditioning training after setting lofty goals for himself this fall. He said he wants to record 20 sacks as a defensive end and climb over 1000 receiving yards after finishing with 19.5 sacks and 743 yards his junior year, adding he wants to win a state championship as well.

Schott still feeling good about Miami commitment

Schott was reminded why he committed to Miami during his June official visit and knows Coral Gables is the spot for him, particularly thanks to his belief in head coach Mario Cristobal and tight ends coach Cody Woodiel. Schott thinks Miami will return to prominence sooner rather than later and wants to get in on the action in South Florida.

“I still feel really good about the decision I made, especially after the official visit,” Schott said. “That was really eye-opening as well. To be able to get down there again, experience an official visit there, I still feel really strong about my decision. They just showed how invested they are in building the program back up to what it used to be. That’s their main goal, to get The U back to where it was.”

Schott said he thinks “it’s possible” he takes an unofficial visit to another school this fall but clarified it will be extremely difficult to pull him away from Miami.

CaneSport’s Take

Schott’s athleticism and versatility makes him one of my favorite Miami commits so far this cycle and an excellent complement to fellow four-star tight end Luka Gilbert’s skillset as a traditional in-line Y. Schott should make an excellent H-back by the time he arrives in Coral Gables.
