Coach’s Take: Top 100 Michigan TE commit Andrew Olesh is a dynamic playmaker
Michigan landed one of its most important targets of the cycle when Top 100 tight end Andrew Olesh gave the Wolverines a verbal pledge on Monday.
Olesh is one of the country’s most dynamic playmakers in the country and has been a standout for Center Valley (Pa.) Southern Lehigh head coach Phil Sams over the last couple of years.
“He’s a stud,” Sams said. “He’s an excellent football player. He’s a playmaker. He gets better every year. His body has changed. He puts time in the weight room. He does everything he can to maximize himself as a football player. He dominated last year. As a sophomore, he had a good year, too. But now, you put the ball in the air, you know he’s going to get it even if there are two or three guys there. That’s the type of attention he brings. We play some teams that might let him catch a ball or two, but then, they’ll put two or three on him. He’s a great player for us.”
Olesh caught 53 passes for 973 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior last season. Olesh spent most of his time split out wide and proved to be one of, if not, the best receiving tight end nationally.
“For us, he’s a wide receiver,” Sams said. “We do bring him in at tight end when we have our two tight end package. But for the most part, he’s flexed out. He’s very dynamic for our level. He has great hands. He can catch a ball anywhere. His catch radius is big. He’s fast. People don’t realize how fast he is. You put the ball in the air, and you think you’re going to overthrow him, and he tracks it down. He’s just so big and runs great routes as far as getting in and out of breaks. He teaches our other kids the routes. He maximizes himself and helps everybody out.”
Sams added that Olesh still has plenty of upside as well.
“These college coaches see something in him,” Sams said. “We obviously do, too. I know different programs run different types of tight ends like H’s and Y’s. I think he’ll be flexed out a lot and catching the ball. They feel like he can dominate early. That’s awesome. I feel the same way, too. You don’t see kids that big that run that well very often. There is a lot more growth to his body as well. He has a good frame.”
Olesh chose Michigan over fellow finalists Alabama, Florida and Penn State. Sams was impressed with the way the Wolverines made Olesh feel like a top priority.
“Michigan is awesome,” Sams said. “They are the national champions. They made the transition from being awesome to being elite. They have a new head coach (Sherrone Moore), but obviously he was there prior. They are beating Ohio State. Michigan has owned Penn State recently, too. That’ll help out for a lot of reasons. I’ve always enjoyed the Michigan program.”
At 6-foot-5, 215 pounds, Olesh is ranked as the No. 3 tight end and No. 93 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking.
