4-star Travis Smith considering the ‘vibe’ ahead of decision
It is decision week for Atlanta (Ga.) Westlake four-star wide receiver Travis Smith. There are four hats expected to be on the table for the No. 59 overall prospect in the On3 Rankings.
It has come down to Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee.
The in-state program has been heavily involved in Smith’s recruitment from the state. Smith camped at Georgia in his freshman year of high school.
The Bulldogs didn’t offer that day but Smith walked out of Athens feeling Georgia’s belief in him. Georgia was one of the first to jump in with an offer. Smith was not ranked anywhere in the industry at that time.
Georgia showed their interest earlier than most programs. The Bulldogs still sit near the top for Smith according to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine.
Georgia has a 72.1 percent chance of landing the four-star wideout according to RPM. Smith took his official visit to Georgia back on May 31.
He felt like a priority once again in Athens over that weekend. He followed the month of June with visits to Auburn (June 7), Alabama (June 14) and Tennessee (June 21).
For Smith, the full load of visits has been key to getting him to this point in his process. Each school provided something different. Smith is big on how he felt around each of the programs and the people on the teams and each coaching staff.
“It’s really just about the vibe that I get from the players and the guys around me,” Smith said. “Ultimately, that’s who I’m going to be playing with as I get on the field. If I don’t have a good connection with the guys that are hosting me and I’m chilling with that’s not good. All of my official visits have been good. The hosts have been great. The players around you can tell they’re with each other putting that work in.”
Travis Smith considering Georgia’s depth
Wide receiver has been a clear point of emphasis for the class of 2025 in Athens. Georgia has landed four prospects in the class already.
Four-stars Talyn Taylor, Thomas Blackshear, Tyler Williams and three-star Landon Roldan have all pledged to Georgia this summer.
The Bulldogs were after four-star CJ Wiley. Wiley committed to Florida State last month.
Georgia could still use more additions to the class of 2025. The Bulldogs will have at least seven draft-eligible players playing wide receiver in 2024. Five of those players are seniors.
For Smith, that matters when considering Georgia.
“It’s a large factor, Georgia will be pretty loaded at the receiver position this upcoming year,” Smith said. “There are going to be guys going to the league or just guys being seniors. They’re losing half or more than half of their room. It’s going to be huge.”
Smith has been honest about Georgia and Tennessee being at the top of his recruitment as of late. With the depth chart in mind, Georgia has four commits in the class already, and Tennessee has two as of now.
Smith has considered that angle as well but he’s ready to compete no matter where he lands on Friday night.
“Tennessee looks fresh but no matter the situation, you have to compete for the position,” Smith said.
Smith will announce his decision approximately Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time.
