Blue Chips: Mother of QB commit Carter Smith talks Michigan, official visit, more

I recently caught up with Amber Smith, mother of On300 2025 Fort Myers (Fla.) Bishop Verot quarterback and Michigan commit Carter Smith, to get her thoughts on U-M and more.

Here are some highlights from the interview.

On why Michigan was the right fit for the family:

“From the first time we stepped foot on Michigan’s campus, we knew. The people. The town. It was incredible. You just knew in your heart that Michigan was where he needed to be, especially after spending time with the coaching staff. It’s a great place.”

On their official visit last month:

“I really enjoyed the time the coaches spent with us. Meeting with the staff 1-on-1 was great. Going to see the dorm rooms was incredible because that was the first time we got to step foot in them. As a mom, that’s important, too — seeing where your child is going to live.”

On hanging out with parents of other commits on the official visit:

“It was great getting to know some of them. We shared a lot of the same questions. Spending the weekend with them, getting to know them and the boys getting to know each other was all great. It was a great time.”

On the Michigan coaching staff:

“I think it’s a great fit for Carter. They are down to earth. They are great people. They are genuine. They really care about each player that they have on the team and the recruits coming in. We went over day-to-day life and what his day would consist of and what to expect. Also, how they would help him develop him as a man with their guidance.”

On the Michigan’s academics and life after football:

“That’s very important. Honestly, that’s the biggest aspect of him going to Michigan — the education he’ll get. The guidance that they have for the student athletes and the resources for them to turn to is great. The MPower presentation was something special. (Sean) Magee was great, too.”

On the Michigan culture:

“It’s truly united there. You see the alumni come back. Everybody is all for it. It’s a good feeling. I know deep in my heart that Michigan is where he needs to be. I know the next six months are going to fly by, and he’ll be off on his own, but I know he’ll be fine with the people and the coaching and what Michigan has to offer him.”
