Carson Beck: Familiarity with offense adds to comfort level in Year 2 as Georgia starter

Carson Beck enters his second season as Georgia‘s starting quarterback with a sense of confidence didn’t have this time last year.

While the Bulldogs didn’t were not rewarded the opportunity to achieve their ultimate goal of winning a third-straight national championship, Beck gained invaluable experience during his first season under center. Now a bit more comfortable in his role, Beck explained how his mindset has shifted heading into 2024.

“It’s a huge part of football and timing and quarterback-receiver relationships. Connection, knowing how one person is going to run around compared to another person,” Beck said at the Manning Passing Academy. “So coming into my second year as a starter and having a lot of those guys coming back that I was able to get a lot of chemistry with and start to build that relationship with over last year.

“Now having another offseason to really work with them, really building that connection and going through the season. I think it definitely adds a comfortability level that wasn’t really there before.”

Beck threw for 3,941 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2023. If he wasn’t comfortable then — the Bulldogs could take the new-look SEC by storm this coming season. After all, many way-too-early mocks have Beck as one of the first quarterbacks taken in the 2025 NFL Draft for a reason.

Based on the Bulldogs’ spring game performance, Georgia’s offense may reflect that projection this season. 14 difference wide receivers had three or more touches during the game, in part leading to Beck throwing for over 300 yards during the contest.

“I think the whole offense made a really big stride this spring, just as far as understanding the offense,” Beck continued. “We’ve got some young guys, some guys that have just transferred in, some new guys, but just the overall understanding of what we’re trying to do. Obviously, I was in my first year. Coach [Mike] Bobo was in his first year.

“There was a lot of firsts for a lot of us. It kind of goes back to being comfortable. I think a lot of us are very comfortable with the team and the offensive, what we’re trying to do and we understand certain plays, certain concepts which obviously makes it a lot more simple and more easy once we get out there on the field and just go compete.”

Georgia kicks off its 2024 regular season against Clemson in Atlanta at the 2024 Aflac Kickoff on Aug. 31.
