Three & Out: Kaelin flips from Mizzou to Nebraska, June official visitor notes, and another possible flip to watch
Three & Out is Nebraska On3’s feature in which recruiting analyst Bryan Munson gives his weekly takes on topical issues concerning Nebraska football and recruiting.
In this week’s Three & Out, we talk about Daniel Kaelin’s love for Nebraska and maturity playing a huge role in his flip from Missouri, lots of official visitor notes, and there is another in-state recruit that could follow Kaelin and flip to Nebraska. Here is your Three & Out!
Kaelin’s love for the Huskers pays off for Nebraska
Daniel Kaelin is a Nebraska commitment. It’s been an amazing week to a week and a half. Honestly, I didn’t think that Nebraska would get Kaelin to listen to them following Dylan Raiola committing to Georgia last week.
Kaelin wasn’t waiting to see what Raiola was going to do. He was going to make up his mind based on his options. I respected it.
Nebraska was playing the cards that they were dealt. The No. 1 quarterback in the country was interested in Nebraska, but the competition would be fierce to get him even if he was a legacy.
If Nebraska missed on Raiola, the plan was to move all of the attention to Kaelin. One wondered if Kaelin, who made his own decision before the offer from Nebraska became committable, would be interested.
Kaelin had to accept the why with Raiola and Nebraska. Moreover, he had to be comfortable not being the top choice. This is what makes his commitment so great.
I don’t know about you, but Kaelin’s commitment announcement was one of the best I had ever seen. It explained why he decided to de-commit and switch to Nebraska, such as being from the state, growing up a fan, pride, and love.
Just a week ago, I said it was concerning that only two were committed to Nebraska out of nine in-state offers. Nebraska not only increased by one but flipped one that was headed out of state.
It required some things to happen, Raiola going elsewhere and Kaelin flipping on his commitment, but it depended on Kaelin’s maturity and love for the Huskers.
Some visitor notes
Over the past week, all of the commitments in the 2024 class have confirmed that they will be in Lincoln for the weekend of June 23rd, except for Willis McGahee IV. He hasn’t set up his official visit yet.
There isn’t anything to fear with his commitment, but it sounds like he might be stuck thinking about an earlier weekend or possibly even taking his official visit to Nebraska in the fall. McGahee is friends with wide receiver Jacory Barney, who is visiting Nebraska on June 2nd.
McGahee is considering another visit date in the fall for the Wisconsin game in Lincoln. He considers Wisconsin cornerback Ricardo Hallman, a very good friend and would like to visit Nebraska when the Huskers play against him.
I caught up with Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman offensive tackle Xander Ruggeroli. Ruggeroli told me before the spring game that he planned to visit Nebraska, but not in the spring. It sounds like the time is coming, and it will be in June. No date yet, but I would expect one soon.
Another OL note, Nuku Mafi from Salt Lake City (Utah) West, talked to me this weekend about coming in for an official visit in the fall. He told me that the Michigan game weekend was standing out. That plan changed quickly because, on Tuesday, he confirmed that he was coming in June for the June 16th weekend. It’s the first official visit that he has set, which is an excellent sign for the Huskers, but he said to me, “I still have more, but I am still planning them out.”
A couple of notes on the Cibolo (Texas) Steele, 2024 recruits that Nebraska has offered. Nebraska will host Dontae Carter the first weekend in June. I added the visit information for him, and he has four visits in June scheduled to his profile on Monday night. Myles Davis, his teammate, told me that at this time, he doesn’t have much interest in Nebraska and isn’t planning a visit to Lincoln.
The same is true for Bennett Warren from Sugar Land (Texas) Fort Bend Christian Academy. Oregon may have canceled or pushed Warren and his official visit out, and Oregon has been on a heck of a run of commits leading into June, and I used this info to ask about Nebraska. He has no visit plans for Nebraska and no intentions to set any up either.
One of my nuggets got scooped on Monday. Carlon Jones from Bay City (Texas) had been considering setting up an official visit. I caught up with him this weekend, and he told me he was headed to Oklahoma State, Cal, and Georgia Tech. Nebraska was one of the schools he planned to visit, but it wasn’t set up yet. It seems like he has and will be in the first weekend in June (quickly, Jones is becoming one of those must-get guys this year for me).
Here is another name for you with visit plans in June but no visit set yet. I would bet this comes together this week. Markie Grant from Houston (Texas) Dekaney told me after picking up an offer from Nebraska recently that he has been working with coach Evan Cooper to set up a visit to Nebraska and that it would be an official visit.
I did get another official visitor confirmed for the first weekend in June. That weekend was already a special weekend for Nebraska because of the number of defensive backs coming in. Mario Buford from DeSoto (Texas) confirmed on Tuesday night that he was also coming in that weekend. The younger brother of Marques Buford, a current Husker, has been up to Nebraska a handful of times already, and the Huskers are currently favored in the RPM over Michigan State.
One last note to pass along, I reached out on Saturday afternoon to chat with Kaelin after he went public with his announcement. He told me that the plan was to officially visit Nebraska on the 23rd (already on the visitor list) and that he plans to come to Lincoln to help recruit as much as he can that month.
Another possible flip to watch
We are just days removed from Nebraska flipping Kaelin to land their quarterback in the 2024 class. Kaelin was one of three in-state recruits committed to other schools. That list may continue to decrease.
A source has confirmed to HuskerOnline that Papillion (Neb.) Papillion-La Vista tight end and Pitt commit Eric Ingwerson plans to visit Nebraska in June. The source couldn’t confirm which weekend Ingwerson would take his official visit to Nebraska next month.
The same source also confirmed that Ingwerson was also planning on taking an official visit to Pitt as well. Ingwerson committed to Pitt in late March, and since he committed, he has visited Nebraska twice, including Nebraska’s spring game.
It’s an excellent year for tight ends in the state. There is Ingwerson and Carter Nelson. You also have Michael Burt from Omaha (Neb.) Creighton Prep and Joseph Stein from Grand Island (Neb.) Northwest has picked up G5 offers, and they are getting P5 interest.
Ingwerson and Nelson stand out, however. Nelson has impressive athleticism, and Ingwerson has a terrific frame. Looking back at the In-State Tour in Omaha, there is no doubt that Ingwerson had us all talking, coming in at 6-foot-7 and 245-pounds.
Kaelin may have been the first in-state recruit to flip in the 2024 class, but he may not be the last. Keep an eye on Ingwerson.
