CaneSport is breaking down the top 50 post-spring players on the roster, a list that doesn’t include any post-spring roster additions. Today we break down No. 30 Ray Ray Joseph.
NO. 30 MIAMI WR RAY RAY JOSEPH
Why he’s No. 30
If that 79-yard TD to cap off the spring game or his five other catches that day weren’t enough to convince you, maybe consider true freshman Ray Ray Joseph’s 4-star status and offers from Clemson (where he was committed at one point), Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M, among others. The 5-10, 175-pound blazer was working with the second team this spring in the slot along with Brashard Smith behind Xavier Restrepo, but we fully expect Shannon Dawson will find a lot of ways to line him up and get the ball in his hands this coming season. He’s too explosive not to find his way onto the field. And Joseph also puts in the work – he would arrive at the Indoor Practice Facility two hours early this spring for extra work on the JUGS machine.
As for his recruitment? Joseph was a four-star recruit out of Miami Edison High School, and the prior staff didn’t recruit him hard so he wound up committing to the Tigers. He decommitted to Miami when Mario Cristobal & Co. pushed hard for him, and stuck by that. He had over 1,200 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior, and can also return kicks at Miami.
What he needs to do to move up this list
Just show improved consistency and provide coaches with the confidence that no moment will be too big for him even though he’s a true freshman. The sky is the limit for Joseph in this style of offense and with a pinpoint passer like Tyler Van Dyke at quarterback. So we would not be at all surprised if when this season ends Joseph moves into the top 10 Hurricanes.
Realistic season objective
A year ago the top producer yards-wise out of the receiver room had just 367 yards (Colbie Young). We can’t imagine there won’t be multiple players that surpass that number this year in Shannon Dawson’s hybrid Air-Raid attack. Yes, we think Joseph will be one of them. You saw in the spring game that his routes ranged from backward tosses to quick hitters to bombs. He’s obviously going to be integrated in all kinds of ways into Dawson’s new offense and he’s going to be exciting to watch given his speed and athleticism. Xavier Restrepo and Brashard Smith are also speedy, talented slot guys (that’s the spot where he was lining up this spring), so Joseph will have to prove he belongs on the field.
