Since Miami (Fla.) Central four-star wide receiver Lawayne McCoy’s April commitment to Florida State, the Miami Hurricanes have not backed down on their pursuit of the South Florida pass catcher but instead have turned up their efforts.
“They’re really trying to come harder now,” McCoy told CaneSport. “It’s always love for the hometown, so when they text me, I’m instantly responding. I’ll always have love for the hometown and for the crib.”
Leading the push for the 6-foot-0, 170-pound wideout is a group of Hurricane staff members, including Roland Smith, Pop Cooney, wide receivers coach Kevin Beard and head coach Mario Cristobal.
“Coach KB (Kevin Beard) is a great guy,” McCoy said. “He’s given me a lot of tips about playing wide receiver. He’s put so much in and gave me some tips to take my game to the next level in the one day I just met him.”
McCoy, who is the No. 300 overall prospect and No. 47 wide receiver in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, recently visited Miami and says he saw a side of the Hurricanes he had not seen before.
“It was like a little get-together with everyone just having a good time and getting in the pool and playing basketball,” McCoy said. “I had a good day, and I got to see a few different things I hadn’t seen from Miami. I met a few people that day, so it was a good day for me.”
McCoy is not shutting out other schools
With McCoy committing relatively early in the process, the South Florida native believes FSU is the perfect fit for him at the moment. But as is often the case in recruiting, he is not dismissing any programs moving forward.
“Just being at Florida State felt like home every time,” McCoy said. “I have a lot of love for Florida State, and they have a lot of love for me, so I felt like it was the right decision. I’m still open to all schools, but at the moment, I felt like it was the right decision for me.”
While McCoy remains locked in with the Seminoles right now, he is by no means shutting down his recruitment. Since announcing his pledge, McCoy has continued to hear from the likes of Florida, Oregon, UCF, and Miami. Thus far, McCoy has one official visit set up to UCF on June 9 and also plans on taking others to Florida State, Penn State, West Virginia, and Miami. He says clarity and honesty will be two things he will be considering down the road throughout the process.
“Just keeping it real with me,” McCoy said when asked what it would take to possibly flip his commitment. “Not feeding me lies to get me to come to a program. Just keep it 100 with me, and that’s really it.”
CaneSport’s take
As expected, the Hurricanes have continued to pursue the talented wideout despite his commitment to FSU. Getting McCoy on campus was a step in the right direction for Cristobal and company as they look to flip the four-star prospect. His early commitment to FSU came as a surprise, but it will be a continuous uphill climb moving forward. With an official visit in consideration, getting that oh-so-crucial trip locked in should be Miami’s next goal with McCoy.
