Alabama freshman Tony Mitchell to plead “no contest” to felony marijuana charge

Alabama freshman Tony Mitchell has reached a legal resolution following a run-in with police in March that triggered a suspension from the team.

According to a report from AL.com, Mitchell will enter a “no contest” plea in the case on Wednesday in a Florida court. Mitchell was charged with felony possession of marijuana after a police chase on March 15.

He will receive probation and drug counseling.

Police chased Mitchell, a high-profile recruit who signed with Alabama in 2023, at speeds of up to 141 miles per hour. Upon stopping Mitchell, they seized $7,000 in cash, nearly half a pound of marijuana and a gun, which Mitchell denied was his.

Mitchell was subsequently suspended from the team following the news of his arrest.

“Tony Mitchell has been suspended from the team and all team activities until we gather more information on the situation and what his legal circumstance is,” head coach Nick Saban said. “Everybody has the opportunity to make choices and decisions. There’s no such thing as being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“You got to be responsible for who you’re with, who you’re around, and what you do. Who you associate yourself with and the situation you put yourself in. It is what it is but there is cause and effect when you make choices and decisions that put you in bad situations.”

Mitchell’s attorney, Waylon Graham, explained to AL.com recently what the “no contest” plea would mean.

“We believe this case is rapidly coming to a conclusion,” said Graham.

Graham explained the legal process to AL.com. Basically, Florida law allows for “a withhold of adjudication,” meaning Mitchell would be charged with a felony but not convicted; he’d then be fast tracked for probation, as a first-time offender in the state.

Mitchell played high school football at Alabaster Thompson (Al.) High School, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 116 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

He also checked in as the No. 10 safety in his class and the No. 12 overall player from the state of Alabama, hailing from Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson.

On3 will have more on this developing story shortly.
