On3 No. 3 EDGE Smith Orgobo dives deep into his recruitment, Texas
For 2025 Houston (Texas) Alief Hastings four-star Smith Orogbo, his recruitment is close to the finish line.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder, who didn’t start playing football until his freshman year of high school, is down to three schools; Texas, Oklahoma, and Washington, he told On3 on Thursday. And he has an announcement date for July 1st.
What are some of the biggest factors for Orogbo before his big decision?
“Starts with the coaching staff,” Orogbo told Inside Texas. “Reputation, experience, and the coaching style of the head coach and assistant coaches. Program success, the team’s performance history, championships won, and consistency in competing at a high level. The facilities, quality of training facilities, stadium, and other sports-related infrastructure. The development opportunities, the program’s track record in developing players for professional leagues, such as the NFL. Then playing time and the potential for early playing time and fit within the team’s roster and playing style.”
He’s taken trips to programs across the country, including Texas on June 14-16. What stood out after hos time on the Forty Acres earlier this month?
“The tradition and history,” said Orogbo. “Texas has a storied football program with a rich history and tradition of success. State-of-the-art training facilities, stadium, and resources available to athletes. The reputation and experience of the current coaching staff, as well as their ability to develop players. The fan base is passionate and dedicated that creates an exciting and supportive game-day atmosphere. That NFL pipeline, and strong track record of producing NFL talent and providing exposure to scouts and professional opportunities.”
Texas Tech had some early buzz, and he also took officials to Washington, Kansas, and Oklahoma. But what is it about Pete Kwaitkowski and the Longhorns that has them in the mix?
“The relationship and program insights,” Orogbo said. “A strong alumni network. Texas has a vast and active alumni network, providing networking and career opportunities both within and outside of sports. The supportive community with robust academic and athletic support services for student-athletes. The location, Austin. It’s a vibrant city with a growing economy, cultural activities, and strong local support for the football program. The emphasis on player development, with both athletic and personal development, ensuring players grow on and off the field. The national exposure and regular national television coverage and a strong media presence, enhancing visibility for players. Plus, the future opportunities. The program’s connections and reputation can open doors for post-college careers, whether in professional sports or other fields.”
Orogbo is the No. 95 overall prospect in the 2025 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 13 EDGE and the No. 16 recruit in the Lone Star State.
On3, however, is much higher on him than the other three services. In the most recent On300 rankings, he was tabbed as the country’s No. 26 recruit, No. 3 EDGE, and No. 7 player in Texas.
