Rough-cut Recruiting Insider: The latest intel on 5 major Auburn targets

A rough-cut, unfiltered look at five of the most important recruiting targets for Auburn as it stands today. The very latest intel we have gathered..

OT – Andrew Babalola, Overland Park (Kan.) Blue Valley Northwest

Auburn has been considered in the race with Babalola since around February. According to my intel, Auburn is still very much in the hunt with Babalola even while others make moves–so much so that I have considered putting in a prediction for the Tigers. This one could still go a few ways, so that wouldn’t be the best bet in my opinion. I can’t make the call on any of the three schools right now: Auburn, Stanford, Michigan.

Michigan made a big move on its official visit weekend, Stanford has always been there for academic reasons, and Auburn is there as well. Babalola’s brother attends Tuskegee University, but I don’t see that as being a major factor in his recruitment. The relationship with Auburn offensive line coach Jake Thornton and others on staff is a big deal.

Auburn has a realistic shot based on my intel. There is not a known timeline of when he might decide, but our intel suggests it could happen before the summer is over and before the season. Auburn and Babalola’s camp remain in constant communication.

WR – Caleb Cunningham, Ackerman (Miss.) Choctaw County

The latest news about Cunningham has been grim for Auburn. However, our intel suggests a Big Cat Weekend visit is still very much on the table. If that visit takes place, Auburn should still be considered a major threat to land his commitment, I think.

Alabama surely has momentum with Cunningham. Ole Miss has not gone away, nor has Mississippi State. Still, we see Auburn as being in this race with a chance to make another big move. Right now, Alabama is the school it will have to beat head-to-head it seems.

Things change hourly in recruiting, but our latest intel suggests a commitment from Cunningham is not yet in the works.

QB – Julian Lewis, Carrollton, Ga. (USC)

Personally, I have always been skeptical about Auburn landing a commitment from Julian Lewis. There are a lot of complicated factors at play with quarterback recruitments, and this one probably pushes the envelope even further.

As of right now, the confidence in our sources seems lower than it has been in a while. There has been a question floating around: How long will Auburn wait for Lewis to make a final decision? In my opinion, not too long. A move must be made somewhere at quarterback.

I do expect Auburn to take a high school quarterback to help stabilize the class. If that is the case, lingering is probably a bad idea. I think there could be movement with Lewis soon, and right now, I don’t like where Auburn stands.

Edge – Herbert ‘Third’ Scroggins, Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine Military

Things in recruiting change hourly.. This recruitment is one of those. At one point, our confidence couldn’t be any higher that Scroggins would commit to Auburn. That notion has changed after speaking with sources close to the situation.

Right now, I give Miami an edge in this recruitment. However, I am not ready to make a change to my Auburn prediction. Miami has the momentum, but Auburn does not want to lose Scroggins. So, I want to watch this one play out over the next few days before making a change.

At this time, I am heavily contemplating making the flip in my prediction to Miami.

OL – Jacobe Ward, Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine Military

Many things have changed in the past week, but I still like Auburn’s positioning for Ward. LSU was coming on strong, and he did make his official visit over the weekend, but there still seems to be some confidence on the Auburn side.

I like my pick in Auburn for Ward even as his teammate, Third Scroggins, could be trending toward Miami. We will continue to monitor this one, though. LSU seems to hold him in high regard as Auburn does.
