Coach’s Take: Michigan LB commit Cole Sullivan is ‘simply an elite athlete’

Coach’s Take: Michigan LB commit Cole Sullivan is ‘simply an elite athlete’

The Wolverine spoke to Pittsburgh (Pa.) Central Catholic head coach Ryan Lehmeier, who gave his thoughts on new 2024 Michigan linebacker coach Cole Sullivan. Lehmeier goes in-depth on Sullivan’s decision, his own communication with the U-M coaching staff and the impact Sullivan has had both on-and-off the field.

On Sullivan as a player, person and community leader:

“Cole embodies all of those things and he knocks it out of the park. First off, the kind of person who Cole is and the way he’s able to communicate shows that he’s matured beyond his years. I think he’s comfortable in his own skin and he’s very confident of himself. It shows when he’s out here. Coming full circle with all of the components that goes into a young guy and with what he has in front of him, he’s been awesome.”

On how Sullivan embraced the recruitment process:

“He was a very sought after young man. I think everything came at him very quick as well but at the same time, he did a very good job of compartmentalizing all of those visits and understanding what he wanted to accomplish. Both academically and athletically. That’s why he chose Michigan. The educational aspect and the fact that they’re a top-five football team. There’s a lot for Cole to be excited about.”

On what Michigan can provide Sullivan:

“When a school like Michigan is recruiting players of Cole’s caliber, that’s what they’re looking at. We talk about that here. The four years at Central Catholic is the next 40 years of your life. Cole took that into his next journey with Michigan, I’m sure. So just the opportunity that Cole has both academically and athletically at Michigan, I think it was a no-brainer for him.”

On communication with the Michigan coaching staff:

“They have been great so far as their communication and their timeliness. They have been as first-class as anyone.”

On what Michigan is getting from Sullivan:

“They’re getting someone who’s highly intelligent and pays a lot of attention to detail. Cole’s in phenomenal shape which allows him to be who he is on both sides of the ball. He’s a long and explosive athlete. He’s really exceptional. He could play free safety if we wanted him to. He could play wide receiver and other spots. He’s simply an elite athlete and we’re lucky to have him.”
