Auburn football rounds out its transfer portal class with a name that emerged just two days before his commitment.
Syrus Dumas, a former New Mexico State corner, will bring some more experience to the Auburn secondary. The Tigers needed immediate depth help to go along with some strong starters at corner.
Here is everything you need to know about Auburn’s new corner.
The Dumas File
Dumas is not tall at 5-foot-10 170, but has pretty good length for that height. He uses that length to help in man coverage.
It is sometimes difficult to find Dumas on game film when he is playing on the field side, and that is usually a good sign. For whatever reason, the ball isn’t going his way much. Dumas handles his man assignments pretty well it seems.
Auburn fit
Dumas bounced back and forth from boundary corner to field corner, but is probably more suited to play on the boundary at Auburn.
Dumas seems to handle the tight spaces well. When he was backed up to the end zone, he often stayed in coverage well. He handled man and zone coverage well while in a tight spot and his back against the wall.
Football IQ
One does not end up with 4 career interceptions without having an idea of what he is looking at. Dumas was able to jump routes at times. It was not always due to speed or quickness, but rather, a good diagnosis of the play.
One area for improvement
Dumas is a lunger when tackling. He misses too many tackles by leaving his feet and going low. He does not have a problem with physicality, but his approach to tackling needs to improve to play in the SEC.
SEC readiness
Dumas is ready to contribute on the SEC level. Is he ready to start? Not at Auburn. There are some seasoned veterans in front of him. He knows that he has a chance to contribute, though.
Dumas can provide some man coverage help. If he plays his assignment as well as he did at New Mexico State for around 20 snaps a game, he will be a great addition.
