Depth Chart Deep Dive: Georgia right tackles
Spring is over, the transfer portal is closed, and we now know a whole lot more about what the Georgia roster will look like in 2023. The Bulldogs wrapped up a successful spring camp nearly a month ago and it’s time to really dig in on what Kirby Smart‘s eighth UGA team will look like.
So we’re ready to take a good, long — like very long, look at the Georgia depth chart. We’re rolling out a series that takes an in-depth look at each position. Next up is right tackle.
Spring synopsis…
A changing of the guard took place — sort of. Warren McClendon has been the primary right tackle at Georgia for the past three seasons. He was a rock at that position for the 2021 National Championship team and started the first 13 games of the 2022 season.
But a knee injury in the SEC Championship vs. LSU broke a string of 37 straight starts. In stepped Amarius Mims, who performed really well against Ohio State and TCU in the playoff. Mims got the vast majority of the first-team reps at right tackle this spring and we’re told that he will remain at that spot going forward.
Chad Lindberg got the No. 2 right tackle reps at G-Day, but he’s not the next man up there. The Bulldogs are likely to dip into the left tackle battle for the next man up on the right side. Austin Blaske and Earnest Greene are competing for that job.
Projected Starter…
Mims is the guy and, as we’ve stated, the plan is for him to remain at right tackle. That doesn’t mean he won’t get some left tackle work during preseason camp but, for now, he’s going to transition into the full-time starter role on the right side.
He’s a mountain of a man with tremendous length and athleticism, the kind of guy who gets taken early in the NFL Draft. Georgia thrust him into the starting lineup in a huge situation last season and Mims appeared comfortable and confident. It’s a good thing he decided to remove his name from the transfer portal a year ago. Blaske and Greene are both going to cross-train at this spot and they’re probably going to get a series or two early in the season to help build depth at both tackles.
Other than injury, what can change?
Well, Mims isn’t losing this spot as long as he’s healthy. We’ve already discussed the possibility of a three-man rotation at tackle and if that happens, Mims will come off the field the least.
With that said, there is one thing that could possibly change this thing up a little bit but it’s highly unlikely. Let’s say Monroe Freeling really comes on during camp. That particular element isn’t unlikely but lets say he comes on to the point that he starts taking reps at the tackle positions and Georgia tries to get four guys some work. That would be odd. We don’t see it happening. It’s not impossible.
