Auburn football has landed another transfer in former Liberty edge Stephen Sings.
The Tigers needed some more depth at edge, and they now have it in a player who had nearly 4 sacks a year ago. Not only did he have some big plays, he played for a top-notch defense, and for Auburn’s current coaches.
Here is everything you need to know about Auburn’s new edge player.
The Sings File
Sings is listed at 6-foot-3 255 pounds. He is a bigger body at edge and can handle the edge setting job pretty well.
Sings makes his impact in different ways. He helps linebackers on the edge, sometimes provides some good pass rush, and understands how to get his hands in the passing lanes.
Auburn fit
Sings fits as an edge player, but one who is more willing to set the edge while providing extra pass rush. He is not a bad pass rusher, but definitely better at holding the edge. Sings could also provide help as a strong side end with a hand in the ground as well.
Sings more than likely won’t start for Auburn, but he is as badly needed as Jalen McLeod was for the depth and quality of the defense as a whole.
Football IQ
Sings shows the best IQ when taking on blockers. He is physical, but has a good understanding of how to keep his positioning with leverage. He can even keep an arm free to make tackles or keep contain on the end. He helps take away the power g and counter plays.
One area for improvement
Sings lacks pass rush moves at times. He can be a little stiff as a pass rusher, but without moves, he can be taken out of the equation pretty quickly. If you have stiffness, you must have good moves. Sings needs to improve in that area.
SEC readiness
Sings is ready to be a contributor in the SEC. He is probably not ready to be a starter, but can contribute and bring plenty of good traits to the defense.
His experience and ability to make a variety of different kind of plays makes him an upgrade over Dylan Brooks, who would have been in his place on the depth chart.
