Dan Lanning built a top-10 recruiting classes in his first year with Oregon. Now in year two, Lanning and his staff look well on their way to building one of the nation’s top classes yet again.
The Ducks landed Bowie (Md.) St. Frances Academy four-star quarterback Michael Van Buren on Saturday afternoon. His pledge elevated Oregon’s 2024 recruiting class to No. 8 in the 2024 On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. Oregon’s group, which also ranks No. 1 in the Pac-12, rose one spot from No. 9.
Van Buren is the No. 182 overall prospect and No. 13 quarterback in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 5 player in Maryland.
“What stands out about Oregon for me is my relationship with the coaching staff and the great people they have in the building,” Van Buren said of the Ducks when he announced his top schools. “Everyone there always has high energy, shows a lot of love and really care about each other in the building. With Coach (Dan) Lanning, a big thing with him is family and that’s why he chose to go to Oregon.
“I also built a relationship with Coach (Will) Stein when he got there and my mother finally got the chance to go up there and meet him in person. She really enjoyed that. Oregon also preaches that they’re one step from winning a national championship. They’ve been there and they feel like they can back and win it with me leading them there.”
Oregon picking up steam during the spring
Van Buren’s commitment bring the total number of pledges for Oregon this cycle to 12. Four-star cornerback Ify Obidegwu and four-star wide receiver Jordan Anderson are the Ducks highest-rated commits as top-100 prospects.
In total, the Ducks now have nine four-star commitments making up the majority of their class. Seven of their 12 commitments have come since the beginning of April.
Oregon wrapped up the 2023 recruiting cycle with the No. 8 class in the country. That class was comprised of 30 signees and highlighted by top-50 defensive lineman Matayo Uiagalelei.
