Latest on Michigan’s pursuit of Top 100 WR Gatlin Bair
Top 100 Burley (Idaho) Senior wide receiver Gatlin Bair told The Wolverine on Saturday that he’s expected to make an official visit to Michigan on June 23rd.
That date falls on the final weekend of the summer official visit slate leading up to the July dead period. It’ll also be Bair’s first appearance in Ann Arbor after not being able to come on campus unofficially this offseason because of track commitments.
Michigan enters June with one 2024 wide receiver commitment in Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day three-star Channing Goodwin. For Bair, who’s long been a priority target for the Wolverines for several months, is the second pass catcher this cycle to have scheduled a visit to the school next month following St. Louis (Mo.) University five-star Ryan Wingo (June 9th).
Bair yields a unique connection to Michigan because of his head coach Cameron Andersen, who was the former head coach of U-M tight end Colston Loveland, a fellow Idaho native. The Michigan staff has made more than one trip out to Burley during the spring evaluation period with safeties coach Jay Harbaugh recently stopping by earlier this week.
Flying out to Ann Arbor for the first time will include heavy emphasis put on Michigan’s strength and conditioning program for Bair, who has dreams of becoming a collegiate S&C coach and has heard nothing but good things regarding Ben Herbert’s track record of developing NFL-ready talent.
Bair, the No. 1 overall prospect in the state of Idaho, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, dropped a top five list back in April that featured Michigan, TCU, Nebraska, Boise State and Oregon.
“I think one of the biggest things is just getting there finally and seeing the entire campus and city itself,” Bair told The Wolverine last month. “There have been a lot of schools that I’ve visited and the place itself has been a lot better or a lot worse than I thought. So once I’m able to get on campus and get a feel of (Ann Arbor), that’s going to be a really big factor. Also, getting to meet the strength and conditioning staff. Really get a feel of their plan for me, as well as get to meet every coach and player in the building. Hear and learn what they have to say.”
State records broken in track
When The Wolverine visited Bair at this school last January, there were enlarged posters hung up in the hallway near the gynmasium that showed every record achieved by former Burley High track stars. When asked how many events Bair was planning on breaking this spring, he simply said with a smile “a lot.”
But it’s not just school records that Bair is breaking, it’s state records as well.
On Friday, Bair became the new Idaho state record holder for both the 100m (10.15) by nearly two-tenths of a second and the 200m (20.41).
This will be the final go-around on the track for Bair as he’ll graduate early in December and begin his two-year LDS mission.
