Makhi Williams-Lee sees NC State’s passion during official visit
Makhi Williams-Lee took his first of three official visits last weekend, spending June 7-9 with NC State. The explosive defensive lineman is one of the top rapidly rising prospects in the country, and he is strongly considering the program ahead of a summer decision.
He bonded with the coaching staff and the current players during his visit, enjoyed dinner on floor 28 of Raleigh’s Wells Fargo building and answered some of his questions around the Wolfpack’s defensive scheme.
NC State’s city-like atmosphere stood out to him, and the weekend went well overall. Next, he will travel to Oklahoma June 14 and Texas Tech June 21 before making his commitment July 4— his birthday.
“It was good,” Williams-Lee said. “I enjoyed being around them. It actually went as planned. They’re very good people.”
In addition to his three official destinations, the 6-2, 275-pound lineman is also considering Troy down the home stretch of his recruitment. Over the next several weeks, Williams-Lee will separate his four finalists by which coaching he gets along with more and if the staff has his best interests in mind.
He spent time with defensive line coach Charley Wiles and head coach Dave Doeren while on campus. The versatile prospect, who could play inside or on the edge for NC State, said it was clear that they really care about their roles with the Wolfpack.
“You could tell they love what they’re doing,” Williams-Lee said. “They’re passionate about what they’re doing, and they want the best for you.”
NC State offered Williams-Lee May 14. He locked in his official visit soon after and has been building a connection with the program ever since. He liked what he saw from Wiles during the weekend in Raleigh.
“Coach Wiles is a very energized guy,” Williams-Lee said. “I love it. He’s got a great personality from my standpoint.”
In the film room, the priority prospect said he was skeptical about his fit into NC State’s defense at first. Williams-Lee said, as the staff explained the system more, he began to see a potential role for himself on the program’s three-man front.
Redshirt freshman linebacker Kelvon McBride hosted the defensive lineman, and the rising senior also spent a lot of time with freshman linebacker Joshua Ofor, who is also from Georgia.
Overall, Williams-Lee said he learned everything he needed to know about NC State on his first trip to campus. Now, he has two more visits to take before his decision.
“The type of people they are are the type of people I would want to be around,” Williams-Lee said. “But with that being said, I’ve also got two more official visits…”
