Alabama softball leading Long Island after early onslaught in NCAA Regional opener

The Alabama softball team is underway in an NCAA Regional against Long Island, and things got off to a promising early start for the Crimson Tide.

The team plated a run in the first inning and two in the second inning to open up a 3-0 lead on the Sharks.

Much of the damage was done with two outs.

“I have been harping on two-out hits since probably February 20,” coach Patrick Murphy said. “It’s been a good night so far, hopefully we can keep it going.”

Alabama opened the scoring with a two-out rally in the bottom of the first inning. After a groundout and a foul-out opened the game, third baseman Ashley Prange hit a double to left-center field. She scored shortly after when designated player Bailey Dowling hit an RBI single to left field.

The Crimson Tide tacked on two more in the bottom of the second inning.

First baseman Emma Broadfoot drew a leadoff walk, then second baseman Kali Heivilin hit a two-run homer to left field to make it a 3-0 Alabama lead.

Meanwhile, Alabama softball’s pitching has been on point.

Starter Jaala Torrence had faced just 13 batters, one more than the minimum, through the first four innings. She gave up just one hit, while striking out four and walking none.

“Jayla, the last inning her change-up was awesome and that was a little surprise there,” Murphy said in the middle of the fourth inning. “She hadn’t thrown it much before that, but it was a really good pitch that inning.”

Still, even with a 3-0 lead the Crimson Tide would like to add a little more run support. It’s been tough to come by with Long Island turning to Alyssa O’Donnell in the circle after the first inning.

O’Donnell had allowed three hits and struck out one through three innings of work.

“She’s got a really good like off-speed, almost like a riseball,” Murphy said. “It’s a change-up that kind of rises, so we need to lay off that, see it down in the zone and I think we’ll be OK.”

Play had just begun in the top of the fifth inning with Alabama softball leading 3-0 at the time of publication.
