Derry Norris leaves Miami Hurricanes official visit officially impressed: “I saw some great things”
Port Orange (Fla.) Spruce Creek defensive lineman Derry Norris was in Miami this past weekend for an official visit with the Miami Hurricanes.
“Everything was great this weekend, and I saw some great things,” Norris told CaneSport. “The coaches were great. They don’t act like coaching staff but more like family, and I feel like I’m needed here. They definitely set the bar high.”
Throughout the weekend, Norris had several extensive conversations with Miami defensive line coaches Joe Salave’a and Jason Taylor, who laid out the vision they have for him in their program.
“They talk about development and the chance of taking over and things like that,” Norris said. “Really being able to help lead the team to the old Miami.”
Following his official visit, Norris raved about the boat ride that the Canes took him on, which showcased Miami. Seeing both what the Hurricanes had to offer on the field and off of it has piqued his interest in the program.
“We were on the boat, cruising through the city, seeing a bunch of houses,” Norris said. ”You really can see there’s a bunch of opportunities here for you to have a chance to progress in life.”
During his junior season, Norris accumulated 63 tackles (36 solo), 12.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and one pass deflection. He is currently the 44th-ranked defensive lineman in the On3 Industry Ranking.
Following his visit to Coral Gables, Norris has a visit lined up to Minnesota on June 14 and then Purdue on June 21.
“I’m really open still, but I want to take all my visits,” Norris said. “I just want to compare all the schools on the visits while I’m going through my process.”

Miami did a great job of showcasing what they have to offer to Norris and seemed to have left a lasting impression on the defensive lineman, who will announce his decision after finishing up his summer official visits.
