4-star Edge Jared Smith on message from Hugh Freeze: ‘Why not come change this place?’
AUBURN – Jared Smith, a 4-star edge from Hoover (Ala.) Thompson, camped at Auburn with his team on Thursday. Really, he was more of a spectator as he spent time with Auburn coaches while watching his team compete.
“Man, it was a big opportunity for me to get down here today and get a feel for the players that might come to Auburn,” Smith said. “Jourdin Crawford was here today and just talking to him and seeing how this place can change with just a few people who could commit.”
Smith is the No. 41 overall player in the class of 2025, the No. 5 edge, and the No. 2 player in the state of Alabama according to the On3 Industry Rankings.
What is next for Smith?
Who are the main schools in contention for Smith?
“I’m considering USC, Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina,” he said. “Everybody is on the same level.”
Smith says he will take his Auburn official visit during the season, but he would like to have a commitment before then.
“I’m trying to make my commitment before the season,” Smith said.
The upcoming Big Cat Weekend visit for Smith is an important one for him.
“Man, very (important),” he said. “To see how I fit, see how I fit with the players, the coaches and the scheme they run.”
Auburn is recruiting Smith as an outside linebacker/Buck edge player. His main recruiter is Josh Aldridge.
“Man, (he’s) good, very good,” Smith said. “Talking to him about not just football, it’s very good.”
Smith got some one-on-one time with Freeze on Thursday, too.
“I talked to Coach Freeze and he FaceTimed my mom,” Smith said. “That’s what you want, the head coach saying he wants you.”
Freeze’s message to Smith is simple: “Why not come change this place?”
