Commitment Breakdown: What Auburn is getting in 4-star CB Donovan Starr

Everything you need to know about new Auburn commit Donovan Starr, a 4-star cornerback from Brentwood, Tenn., Ravenwood.

The Starr File

— Starr has a smaller build, but measured in at 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds at Auburn–which is more than enough size. He has bigger legs for someone who weighs 175 and builds out a lot like a track athlete.

— The track build checks out as Starr is a definite track star. He can fly. Starr has an elite burst on tape.

— Starr’s ability to stick and go is one of his best attributes. He does not waste steps, nor does he have a hard time putting a foot in the ground and changing direction.

— As a return specialist, and even as the runner after an interception, Starr is a flash. He has elite speed.

Auburn fit

— For Auburn, Starr is probably not one of the most versatile prospects. His skillset has a strong fit with being a field corner. He needs to be in space where he can cover a lot of ground and chase if needed. He has the speed for it.

— Starr plays tight coverage, then he plays the ball very well when it is in the air. He can play man coverage at a high level and shows a big skillset when playing in one-on-one situations.

— There is not much evidence of Starr as a tackler, but if he plays on the field side, he can be more of a coverage guy, which fits his skillset.

Football IQ

— When playing corner on the boundary, Starr has not yet learned to close out against the boundary. This is why his fit feels better at field safety. His speed can win out over his physicality at this point.

SEC readiness

Starr has the speed necessary to play in the SEC. His physicality needs work, but he is a willing tackler. Most of his physicality concerns come with being on the smaller side, not necessarily his mentality. He has a lot of ability and has a ceiling to build on for the next level.
