Purdue 2025 recruiting checkup: Receivers

Purdue 2025 recruiting checkup: Receivers

MORE RECRUITING CHECKUPS: Quarterbacks | Running backs | Tight ends

On-campus recruiting will begin to heat up for Purdue with official visits coming in June.

The staff already has five commitments in the Class of 2025 in what’s expected to be a smaller class … in the 14-18 range. Let’s check in–position-by-position–on how Purdue is recruiting in the 2025 cycle.

Next up: Receivers.

Current situation

Purdue has no wideout commitment so far in 2025. But, the staff–led by uber recruiter Cory Patterson–is in the chase for a few. How many wideouts can we expect to see the Boilermaker staff ink on signing day in December? Probably between 1-3. That number is low because Patterson just brought in a raft of new wideouts this offseason.

How many? All together: Eight.

Purdue imported three from the portal: Kam Brown, C.J. Smith and De’Nylon Morrissette. And JC transfer Leland Smith also is here. Plus, Patterson inked four 2023 prep wideouts: Donovan Hamilton, Tra’Mar Harris, Shamar Rigby and Jesse Watson.

The number of new receivers is really nine, as Jahmal Edrine essentially is a newcomer after missing 2023 with a knee injury after transferring from Florida Atlantic.

All together, Purdue has 14 receivers on scholarship. And only three are slated to leave after the season: Brown, Andrew Sowinski and Jayden Dixon-Veal.

2025 targets

Purdue seemingly was well positioned with three 2025 wideouts. Now? Things are murky.

First, Indianapolis Lawrence North’s Davion Chandler dropped Purdue. Then, Hammond (Ind.) Morton Senior’s Lebron Hill shockingly committed to Louisville, while Fishers’ (Ind.) JonAnthony Hall could be a tougher “get” since receiving a Notre Dame offer.

As of now, Hill and Hall still plan to come to Purdue for OVs June 14-16.

My take

Wideout isn’t a big position of need in this 2025 class, given the raft of new pass-catchers just imported from the portal, JC and prep ranks — and the lack of receivers expected to leave after 2024. Maybe that’s a good thing, given the tumult that has struck Purdue’s only three legit wideout 2025 targets.

Can Purdue flip Hill? Can Hall be sweet-talked to commit and eschew the Fighting Irish? Will any other 2025 targets emerge?

Know this: Purdue would take both Hill and Hall if they want to commit. These are the guys Ryan Walters would like. The staff felt good about Hill, which made his pledge to Louisville a head-scratcher. Hall? Who knows? Chandler just flat-out cancelled his OV and is focused on Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.

It will be fascinating to see how all of these new wideouts are folded in. Any difference-makers in the bunch? You know there will be a few non-factors.
