2025 Iowa hoops recruiting rundown

After a flurry of offers to prospects in the Class of 2025 and 2026 last week, we are now in a bit of calm when it comes to recruiting. While the contact with prospects will continue when and where allowed, in talking with sources close to the program, June should be relatively quiet in terms of visits.

As we look at the Class of 2025, Iowa will likely look to sign at least three prospects in the fall, if possible. While many programs today will look more to the transfer portal, Fran McCaffery is content to recruit high school players and mix in with a transfer or two in the spring depending on what happens with the roster.

What direction will Iowa look to fill as far as positions? Probably point guard, a wing guard position, and a post player seem the most likely spots to fill. So, let’s look at the prospects to watch moving forward.

First let’s look at the guard/wing positions.

At point guard, it’s pretty murky for Iowa in terms of their top targets. Also, it’s worth noting that while some prospects are taking official visits this month, many start to firm up their visits and lists of schools they are still considering in August. Then they schedule official visits for September and October.

Among the point guards in this class, the names to watch would include Juan Guerrero Hernandez, Keyshaun Tillery, and Chance Mallory. If there is a position where I think a new name might emerge this summer, it’s probably at point guard.

As far as shooting guards, Iowa will look to likely land at least one player. The names to watch are all relatively new names, receiving offers this spring. Those names include shooting guards Simon Walker and Ryan Crotty, along with forwards Chase Thompson, and Ryder Frost.

Finally, we look at the center position, where Iowa has an interesting field of recruits, some who have been long time targets and others who were recently offered. At power forward, there’s the newly offered Brady Koehler from Indiana. The center position has three prospects who seem to be interested in the Hawkeyes. Those include Malachi Moreno, who made an official visit last year, Will Garlock, who might be a prospect who visits this month, and the newly offered Tommy Ahneman, who recently jumped into the Top 50 nationally here on On3.com.

Again, this month and next month will be busy with evaluations. There are a couple of evaluation periods later in June where coaches will be on the road watching prospects in the high school setting and then the traditional evaluation period in July. The expectation is that there may be more prospects that emerge. For example, last year Iowa really didn’t have Chris Tadjo on their radar until July and quickly pounced on the talented forward.
